I like that Oklahoma has the meth pipe right there on the flag. (I actually think the Oklahoma flag is one of the only cool things about that state.) South Dakota sucks because it touts a freaking man-made tourist attraction on the flag.
TxStHorn has the only valid answer here, however there is something ironic about Dakota's flag not only pimping a man made tourist attraction but one that was built right on top of the Paha Sapa. That would be like New Jersey's state flag with something like "Yo - we gots land fills & an endless supply of Joey Porsches."
i had to find all the flags since i had no clue what about 45 of them looked like. doesnt appear there is much room for discussion on this topic. south dakota and oklahoma are far and away the two worst flags. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/US_state_flags
Wow looking at that list, there are a lot of really ****** flags out there. If you have to write a bunch of stuff on your flag, it sucks. If you have to write your state name on your flag in order to identify it, it sucks. Texas stands alone
I'm surprised that our flag is the oldest. I figured some of the original states would have older ones. Of course, ours is the best, that just makes it even cooler.
I think New Mexico, Maryland and Tennessee are cool. Missourri features bears, even though up until reintroduction it was possible they had become extinct in its borders. I actually like Ohio for going with the older naval style, once upon a time rectangular flags were not so common.
Most of them suck. Anything with a state seal or words automatically sucks. The best are Texas, Tennessee, Alaska, and New Mexico. Illinois' is the worst. A complete lack of originality, generic US emblems, and Illinois written on it. Of course, who could tell it was Illinois otherwise with just an eagle and a US crest on it.
Do you realize how long it took, when I moved here, to realize that this symbol I kept seeing was actually the state flag?
The Texas flag is pretty bad-*** even if it is a blatant copy of the Chilean Flag, which is the prettiest flag in the world.
Best: Texas, AZ, NM I mostly agree about the no-words thing, but I think California pulls that off well. I don't think Nevada finished theirs:
