the one on bee caves is really great. its 5 minutes from my office, and now that i think about it i'm not sure why i don't eat there a lot more often clay pit is high quality, but there is not much of a selection on the buffet, maybe 4 or 5 non-soup or salad items
The Far West one is in my neighborhood. Haven't had the buffet, but ordered to go food a few times that was really good. The owners are super nice as well.
The buffet at Chola's has tilapia. Good stuff. Agree with whoever said bombay bistro. the chicken masala there is untouchable.
So, what do you all eat at such a restaurant? Not being a smart ***, I really would have no idea what to order. Buffet is probably not the best place to start, me not being a fan of any type of buffet food.
Be wary of Madras Pavilion as its a veggie only place. I like it fine, but I'm Indian and grew up on that kind of food. Some people may find it tough w/o any protein options. Some good options for first timers... At Clay Pit - the Malai Kabobs are awesome, really simple, perfectly seasoned, mmm mmm goodness. Not exactly "traditional" Indian food but nothing at Clay Pit really is. Anywhere else... Chicken Tikka Masala is a real simple dish with chicken cubes in a tomato based curry. Tandoori chicken (the red chicken) is about as simple as you can get with Indian food and would be a good starter to get going. Very safe choice. Chicken Vindaloo is quite good as well. For vegetables, Bombay Aloo (red potatoes) is good. If you are a fan of spinach, get some saag with your choice of meat or paneer (a nasty *** cheese that i can't believe some people like). Feel free to PM me if you want other suggestions.
I ate at bombay grill last friday. not the best, but it gave me my indian food buffet fix. It was only like $10.
I totally forgot to add that Madras is veggie only because it is soooo delicious and because I am veggie friendly. I don't have to have me no meat every time. But I do love my buttered chicken. So I go other places for that. But for my Masala Dosa's, Madras.
Yall should try Shalimar on North Lamar and Rundberg. It's greasy, yes, but still really tasty. Back when I was at Dell, we used to go there regularly and come back to work stuffed.
I have tried some of the Indian restaurants in Austin. None compare Pavani in Houston. In fact, I have been to Indian restaurants across the country and none of them could top Pavani.
I also like Pavani in Houston... others I liked there were Ashiana and Indika (yeah, not traditional). /threadjack
