1984 as a high school senior. Sat on the 50 under the upper deck and stayed dry as a bone. This year will make 25 in a row.
1958. 15-14 My dad took me to the game. I grew up in a town of 3,000 and we got up while it was still dark for the trip to Dallas. I had never seen so many people nor as many drunk people in my life. Texas scored first and surprised everyone including OU when they went for two points and made it. Texas came back and scored the winning touchdown. As we were leaving the stadium, I heard the chant for the first time: P O O R . S O O N E R S ! I was hooked from that experience. Can't get the smells, sounds and the really stupid fans from each school out of my mind. Have to go back for a new fix each year. See you there in Big D again this year.....
1972. I had failed to get a student ticket, and went to the front gate of the Cotton Bowl, looking for a scalper. I still remember how genuinely shocked I was when a guy holding up a single ticket wanted $25 for it. It broke me to buy it, but i did. A group of us made the trek to Dallas from Austin - all our first ou games - and one guy, just milling around the crowds and streets downtown on Friday got arrested in a cop sweep when some kids raised too much hell, and spent the night in jail. He barely made it to the game. I can still feel the 100 degree heat that baked the inside of the stadium.
2004- My friend was assigned to Jenna Bush's secret service detail and he gave me an all access arm band to the stadium. I was on the field when the teams ran out and watched the first quarter from the field. Spent the rest of the game watching from the stands. Absolutely great experience being on the field. I remember thinking "Man, Adrian Peterson is big!"
My first OU game was in 1961, we won 28-7, and we won 9 out of the first 10 games I attended. Good years to start going to the game in Dallas.
1981. Good Guys won 34-14 - and it wasn't really that close. Gooner stands were pretty empty by middle of the fourth. I have never experienced such an emotionally-charged athletic event. It would have been worth whatever the tickets cost (Don't know, because I was given two tickets by a friend!). HHD
1983. Scalped a ticket and set in OU section. Watched Edwin Simmons pass me mid way to the End Zone. Went to 20 straight before sitting out 2003 to 2006. Returned in 07 and 08. My all time record is 10-10-2. Plan to go 11-10-2 this year to get things right.
1999: Stoops first season. OU jumped out early but Major rallied TX first their last win for a long while.
My first was 1958. I was nine. OU had won six in a row and nine of the last ten. OU came in ranked #2 in the nation and a two TD favorite. Texas knocked them off 15-14 as DKR got things turned around.
1989 - 50 yard line student draw. Gardere to Walker. I have seen lots of great games, but this one is still at the top of my list. The Link
Probably the worst possible introduction to the rivalry. 1986, we lost 47-12 and it wasn't that close. 31-0 at the half, outrushed 396-29, plus it was raining and nasty all day and our seats were behind a pillar under the deck.
another 1994, I was sitting in the upper deck on the goal line where Stonie made the play. The cotton bowl was absolutely rocking.
1975, a classic that didn't go our way, 17-24, however, I came back in '77 and saw the best football game I'd ever seen, until the victory over USC in the MNC game
Freshman Year, 1998. RUN, RICKY, RUN! I remember he broke a 99 yard TD run....that got called back b/c of either a holding call, or block in the back....Forget. Still, we pounded them into the dirt that game.
