ND blocked Golson from Texas

When former Notre Dame quarterback Everett Golson was sifting through his options of places to transfer, he found Texas intriguing.

The Longhorns are in need of stability at quarterback, and head coach Charlie Strong and his staff developed Teddy Bridgewater -- now the Minnesota Vikings starting QB -- into a first-round pick while at Louisville. Austin seemed like a solid spot for Golson to spend his final year of eligibility.

There was just one issue: Notre Dame wouldn't allow Golson to consider Texas, because the two schools face each other in Week 1 of the 2015 season.

I'd block him too if we had someone who was trying a grad transfer to a school we were about to play in 13 weeks. Especially a QB, knowing their signals and what-not.

Golson wasn't going to be our "answer," no matter how much better he might have been compared to Swoopes or Heard in the past. He still had enough issues against weaker competition to see that it wouldn't translate to the Big 12.

Chickenshit move. But I wouldn't expect anything else in this day and age.

If I were confident my transferring qb couldnt cut it as a starter I'd be thrilled to see him throwing INT's for a team I am playing. Otherwise as AD I'd wonder about the capability of the coaching staff not the player.

Hmmm. Looks like Strong is now facing what to do with his only DT commit (Lampkin) reneging on his LOI. According to KXAN sports, Strong & company have not decided on giving him his unconditional release. Well if they have to think about it, they are nuts, especially if it's true that Lampkin is interested in OU. He needs to sit out a year and be prohibited from going to another Big 12 school or a opponent on our schedule.

He'll have to sit a year no matter where goes(D1).

And don't buy any high school deficiency for his exit!

Unless he has assaulted somebody, grown pot and distributed it or some other malicious offense he is not qualified to OU's lofty standards. He's not even a blip on classless Stoops' radar. He is like water under the dam.

The guys that sign an LOI need to understand that it is a legally binding contract, and if you don't want to honor your part there are consequences. I believe but don't know for sure that nothing happens until September 1 if he's still academically ineligible, and probably too late to jump to another program and play. He may go JUCO. Strong needs to stick with his core values and either make him wait or place severe restrictions on where he can transfer to let him out. He has core values and, IMO, this is part of those. Young guys need learn that this is serious business and the consequences for breaking a contract can be severe.

However, somebody truly not happy could fester and turn into a time bomb bringing down morale and other players around him. What stops them from sharing plays and playbooks with another team on the down low out of retribution and spite? Not saying it would happen but you get some young man who fails somehow or feels they did and does not want to be somewhere, it could spell for bad things. I agree that the LOI once signed is a contract but there are bad sides to keeping them here by force.

Completely unrelated to Texas being involved in this particular situation, schools should not have the power to block transfers in the first place.

Disagree, if you are referring to this type of situation. He's not a transfer. When a recruit has signed a NLI, he has taken the slot that would have gone to another recruit. To try and back out in June puts the Athletic Program in a bad position. What does Texas or any other school do? Try and poach and another programs commit?

Texas needs to stop him from going to any other Big 12 team or team on our future schedule.

I disagree. Of course, I also don't think schools should simply be able to take away a players scholarship either as long as the student athlete is meeting a minimum set of commitments (i.e. training, classroom, etc). I think you are going in the direction that if teams can pull a scholarship or coaches can leave on a whim then players shouldn't be held hostage. Ultimately, we agree that the rules for both coaches and kids should be more equal. I'm worried that if kids had no limitations it would be coaches that would be secretly recruiting from other teams. College coaches overall are ethically challenged. Give them an inch and they will certainly take a mile.

Isn't he graduating this summer? That means he can play this fall and get two years of grad school paid for.

Exactly - being the million-dollar man should mean more in the way of responsibilities and commitments, not less. Also, I'm going in the direction that they are in fact student-athletes and should be treated the way other students are to a greater extent, which includes the ability to leave school A and go to school B, should school B want you, without school A intervening.

The reason for the transfer limitations is not to hurt the student, but to prevent schools from continually trying to lure away players on other teams, and in effect have a free agency aspect to college ball.

That said, if a head coach leaves a school for another school, then all players who signed LOI's under that head coach should be free and clear to leave and go to another school without limitations. And, the team who got the new head coach should have their players released as well. If it's OK to lure away a coach from another school, then it should be OK to have your players lured away as well.

Well Charlie just weighed in on both of these topics at the TD Club of Houston. From OB's...

    - Strong said former Notre Dame quarterback Everett Golson contacted him and said Texas was at the top of his transfer list. They tried to make it happen, but Notre Dame blocked Golson from transferring to Texas because both teams play each other this season. Strong said he was not mad at Notre Dame for preventing Golson, who eventually enrolled at FSU, from attending Texas because he would have done the same if in a similar situation.

    - When it comes to a transfer quarterback, Strong will not close the door on possibly obtaining one, but believes the market is probably dried up since it is June. Strong said, “I don’t know who else would be out there when you’re talking about a transfer quarterback. I don’t know who else is left because by now they would have made a decision about where they’re going.”

    - When asked to comment about the Du’Vonta Lampkin situation, Strong declined. Texas has not released Lampkin from his letter of intent, but the defensive tackle still wants to transfer to another university.

So looks like Charlie agrees with blocking transfers in Golson's situation (great to hear since others block). He didn't have a comment on Lampkin which says to me they are likely still weighing options, if any.

Good call on Woulard. I'd imagine Strong is already familiar with him since he came out of Florida. 4-star, 5th ranked dual threat QB. Hope we kick the tires on him.

We need to recruit a QB worth a ****, not kick tires.

It's just an expression to determine his interest. Chill Shag, it's all gonna be okay one day. :smile1:

Buechele will be our next stud QB (IMHO) and he's on his way. Sorry Swoopes, Heard, and Locksley. Shane has the IT factor that exceeds them all in terms of a complete QB package. To me he's the only one who is a true QB, that also runs well. The other 3 are runners who happen to play good QB now and then.

Nothing we can do to get SB here any sooner. In the meantime, anything short of exhausting ALL options until we find the QB of the future is not doing all we can to succeed. So yeah, let's kick some tires on Woulard. :coolnana:

Maybe most already know this, but I wasn't aware Shane's Dad is former Texas Ranger Steve Buechele. Apparently Shane plays shortstop, center field, and pitches at Arlington Lamar.

"I want to play both in college," he said, "but if I have to pick one, I'll definitely play football."

"If Steve Buechele had his way, he'd have his youngest son follow the footsteps of those before him and attend college. Oldest son Garrett played baseball at Oklahoma and was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in 2011. Middle son Tanner played at Fullerton College".

That's some good blood lines for the future Longhorn star. :hookem:
