Baylor In The News - Here We Go Again.....

I know it's money driven most of the time ... But a faith based institution should rise above that so I hoped #Disappointed

Well, look how many of the big named evangelists were either sent to prison, sued or were exposed as charlatans in the late 80s and in the 90s. Baylor doesn't appear to be immune and certainly isn't some sort of Jerusalem on the Brazos. I like the "nuclear wasteland" ref above!

There has been a war between "conservatives" and "moderates" in the Baptist church for years revolving around Baylor, Southwestern Theological Seminary, Southeastern Seminary, as well as a few other institutions. It came to a head when the latter forced Baylor to be governed by a Board of Regents which the conservatives did not want.

The conservative element went so far as to take the head of SWTS to lunch to discuss things, and while they were at lunch the locks on his office were changed. This resulted in Baptist Seminaries being created at other schools. Unless I am mistaken, SMU has a Baptist seminary, Duke has one, and The Truett Lively Seminary was created at Baylor. I think there is also one at Dallas Theological Seminary or maybe UD. i say this believing that no one can condone what is happening in McLennan County, but that the infighting that has been going on for 30 years certainly doesn't allow for a cohesive effort to correct the problem. As a Baptist, it is an embarrassment, but so is the fact that Baylorites want every employee to be Baptist regardless of qualifications.

As I posted previously, Baylor needs to be stripped of all "management and leadership", stop kissing Drayton McLane's ***, and make either Randall O'Brien or Joel Gregory President and the other as #2. Then bring Daniel Vestal in as Chairman of Ethics. The students would rally around Randall; the alums would rally around Joel, and Daniel would have everyone toeing in the line.

The self-serving demi-gods and the great CenTex Drug Dealers Association will never let that happen.

There's a reason the founding member of that faith said it's harder to enter the kingdom of heaven when you're rich. Money buys power, and power corrupts, and person of faith or agnostic or atheist, we're all susceptible. Then you add in the power of groupthink in an organization, where a lack of ethics disguises itself as standing up for the other members of the group, or protecting each other is more important than truth or justice, and a whole lot of folks can let a whole lot of bad things happen all the while thinking of themselves as really good people.

 

I am not one to quote scripture, but since is the "Baptist" school we are talking about here, I also thought of "Whatever you did for the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me." The Baylor officials are protecting their own asses and letting the least of their student body down.
They are not even doing the athletes they try to protect any favors, because in the end, they will be the ones who go to jail, and suffer the consequences of the culture of "winning at all costs".
Could Art Briles have prevented any of these transgressions? Maybe not, if he cared for the players at all, (or the women) he would have tried, and not looked the other way.
Also, Will Art Briles serve any sort of punishment? Probably not, as long as he keeps winning.

 

Some of these guys he picked up after they were dismissed from other schools shows his lack of evaluation of the total athlete or going into depth about those dismissals and or considering the foreseeability of those individuals repeating the acts or committing acts that are even worse. The information, much of it public, was there and based on so many occurrences by various individuals in his program, he was not interested or totally ignorant about asking the question, "is this individual more likely than not going to repeat or commit even worse acts while in our program?" So, the answer is yes, Briles could have prevented acts at Baylor. An individual, if predisposed to engage in criminal acts, won't automatically stop. But they can be prevented from doing so in your program.

Baylor appears to be all about the Ws and big bowls, and are oblivious to the underlying character of the individuals they welcome in their programs. We all know that sometimes a player may wander off the reservation and get into mischief, but at Baylor this isn't rare or random isolated events. It's becoming the norm. And when the egregious acts happen, no immediate disciplinary action is taken at least not against the offender, but pressure is put on the victims and the event buried and hidden. There appears to be no analysis or evaluation of the probability a player that was a problem elsewhere or that comes with a history of criminal issues, will repeat. They do show a willingness to accept the casualties, and cover them up when they do occur.

 

This and the reason why Briles will be stuck at the Baylor's of the world. No major program will take a chance on him.

 

Oh come on Joe, let's cut 'em some slack!

After all, this the first time in their history the football program has enjoyed a prolonged period of success AND they got that shiney, fancy new $tadium over there on the Brazos River to pay for.

Can't let being a faith based institution, rules, character issues and the violation of women get in the way of that.

Update on the appellate activity in the Ukwuachu case...the new trial determination has been set aside by the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals and it goes back to the 10th Court of Appeals to rule on the other elements of the original appeal.
