Take your pick of four: Alabama Clemson Ohio State Michigan Washington Fun bowl game to watch aTm against loser of Michigan/Ohio State, Loserville, UNC or Washington State. Sumlin and the pirate would be fun, or A&M losing to Brian Harsin.
No way Aggies there here in a few weeks, I would say I would eat a crow, but I can't take the pressure of me being a sticky thread here
Just ignore them. Two reasons: (1) no way an undefeated PAC-12 Champion gets left out over a 1 loss non-champion 12 game played $EC team; and (2) aggy stil has 2 losses left (Ole Miss and LSU). No aggy will play ou in the Sugar Bowl and receive a hide tanning of the highest order.
Aggy has a pretty good team, but how in the hell do they get put above a 0 loss Washington team when aggie got beat by 19. SEC bias at it's best.
If OU wins the Big 12 there is a good chance they will meet A&M in the Sugar Bowl. A lot of story lines here: Trevor and Keith Ford facing their old team, the Knight brothers on opposing teams for the first time , the first meeting since Manziel embarrassed the Sooners in the Cotton Bowl, etc. A&M will be the likely choice of the Sugar Bowl as the SEC runner up if they beat LSU. Their chance of making the playoff seems pretty slim at this point unless Bama has a meltdown.
Meaningless somewhat with regard to the final voting on this; however, if the committee is voting that way now, if, IF aggy wins out it would be unlikely UDub would climb over them. As opposed to if UDub were the 4th right now and aggy was 5th. But more importantly, it's a national perception thing ---- aggy is good enough to be considered by supposedly informed folks (final 4 voting committee) as a top 4 team. And Texas is nowhere near that level, and save for the hallucinatory response after beating ND earlier this year, hasn't been for a number of years now. So, yeah, it's kind of a big deal. Among national viewers, BMDs, fans, etc. whether it has any "if A then B" logical certitude of worth.
Yep, Bama will almost certainly be the SEC champ. Aggy might finish 11-1 and tht won't get them in. If it does, I think I'm finished with college football.
Didn't TCU win by 50+ and then drop from 3 to 6 in the final ranking a couple years back? Every one of these rankings are LITERALLY meaningless except the final one that determines the 4 team field.
Phil, We all know what got Fred fired. Sherrill's success was just one of the excuses, but I would submit to you that may have been the ugliest moment in Texas athletics.
There is no way an undefeated P5 conference champ gets left out of a playoff for a once defeated 2nd place team from another conference. Even as much as you love the $EC, it ain't happening. And I'd bet a one loss P-5 conference champ would get in above a 1 loss 2nd place team (unless it was Alabama). Now that I think about it, that is probably the major advantage of having a conference championship game; it gives the rankers a last opportunity to bump conference champs above 2nd place teams with the same number of losses.
Agree Hippie, but then what happens when a 12-0 Texas beats ou by 40 in October and loses by 1 in December?
Sabre ... Akers got fired because the administration (not the same who hired him) decided it was time to replace him ... because he was out of his league. Rather than hire Royal's pick in Mike Campbell, they went with the Longhorn Club projector operator. Lorraine Rogers; what a peach! Akers rode Royal's success until the early 80s like Switzer did with Jimmy Johnson at Dallas. I'm sure Fred is a swell guy and I mean no personal disrespect, but we went into a funk like we did after the '09 season. The only difference there was change in the HC didn't precipitate it.
Not as SEC teams but ever? Yes, 20 times. http://www.winsipedia.com/texas-am/vs/lsu I'm convinced the CFP placed aggy 4th is to get people talking about the CFP rankings. Bama, UM, Clemson, UW was so expected we'd mention it for one minute and move on.
Shaark, Lorraine Rogers never had a clue that Fred was being hired or fired. Fred was hired by Alan Shivers and Frank Erwin. We all know who fired him (not Deloss), but most of us are aware of the despicable options that were put in place to make sure Fred "left". Discussions of those would open a huge can of media worms. As for "riding Royal's coattails", DKR had NOTHING to do with recruiting class in 1980 which produced 23 players signing NFL contracts. Fred may have been boring, but he could flat out coach. The manner and things done during his firing were so "NOT TEXAS" that it made me sick and still does. The things surrounding his dismissal were the darkest hour in the history of Texas football. and quite frankly totally unforgivable.
Yeah. And that is probably one of the biggest pitfalls for a conference championship game, when teams have to play a second time. I guess ideally, all conferences would play a full round robin with no championship game before the playoffs.
aggy has a favorable remaining schedule; @ Miss. St, home for Ole Miss and LSU. Plus, they won't get hammered in the sec champ. game because they won't be in it. If they win out, they could be in it. We can't even complain about sec bias of the committee either, because Kirby Hocutt, AD of Texas Tech is the chair! Other members are: Barry Alvarez(ex Wisc. coach), Jeff Bower (former So. Miss coach), Herb Deromedi (former Cen. Mich. coach), Tom Jernstedt (ex NCAA VP), Bobby Johnson (ex-Vandy coach), Jeff Long (Arky AD), Rob Mullens (AD Oregon), Dan Radakovich (AD Clemson), Condi Rice, Steve Wieberg (USA Today), Tyrone Willingham(coach ND & Stanford). But, I have an abiding faith that aggy will screw it up somehow.
Help please - does this committee serve at the request of the NCAA? Are they under the authority of the NCAA? Serious question because one of them passed out more car keys as illegal inducement than all the rest combined. If this is an NCAA committee, it's kinda like having Billy Sol Estes or Ben Jack Cage on the senior loan committee.
Clearly you have this figured out. You may consider, however, Akers' hiring was a mistake and was done to spite Royal. Ever heard of success begetting success? Of course DKR influenced the early Akers squads. Same sort of phenomenon which resulted in our lacking a QB after 2009 ... the word was out about Mack's deals, unfortunately.
I shall NEVER consider the hiring of Fred Akers a mistake. I have always said that Darrell Royal brought Texas to national prominence, but Fred Akers made us nationally competitive. The lengths to which certain people were willing to go to oust Fred were an abomination. As bad as I want a new coach, I would NEVER do the things to Charlie Strong that were done to Fred, nor that others were prepared to do to our players.
For those who chose to ignore reality, DKR went 5-5-1 (only by winning that last game on a dismal, misty, dreary night in Austin did DKR go out as never having a losing record at UT) his last season, dead set on continuing the triple option wishbone with an overweight, out of shape, hamsting pull plagued Earl at fullback. Bumper stickers all over Austin showed a chained Earl trying to free himself with "Unleash Earl" showing that even tge average fan understood DKR was wrong on this. Akers came in, and unlike Switzer following Jimma, who could just roll out the footballs and say "get after it 'Boys" and win a Super Bowl, Akers DRAMATICALLY changed UT football. From a 5-5-1 prior DKR season, Akers' version of the Horns with a slimmed down Earl dotting the I formation, a youthful vigor that DKR had lost, took them to the Number 1 ranking after 5 weeks, directing Earl to UT's first Heisman, Shearer the Outland winner, Akers as national coach of the year, and an 11-0 record, playing ND for the national championship. Yeah, just like Switzer taking over for Jimma.
LOL ... Akers did that for which he was qualified AFA DKR is concerned ... he ran the projector during Longhorn Club meetings. Darrell had a tough 1976 season, that's true ... do you think that was related to the support .. or the coup ... which was brewing and executed or was that because DKR had just lost it and was no longer a good football coach? Akers did NOT make Texas nationally competitive. It ALREADY WAS. Mediocrity was the word of the day under Akers. Had some great players, but under Akers, I learned one could get a delay of game penalty in the 2 minute offense. y'all carry on with revisionist history if it makes ya feel better. Mike Campbell should have been DKR's successor.
Shaark. We were nationally competitive by getting killed the last few years by State Penn, Nebraska , and Auburn or anyone else outside the SWC? I was sitting in a group after a golf tournament when DKR stated he left because he could no longer relate to the "current players", that Bevo, The Tower glowing orange, Hook 'em, didn't mean anything to the new breed of HS player. I didn't agree with his statement, but it was his statement. In 9 years, Akers never lost a regular season nonconference game, except against Barry, and he was 5-3-1 against Barry. Fred had one losing season as the result of a missed FG in Lubbock, a game where Texas only had two healthy LBs, one of whom was a walkon. He had a remarkable record of 75-80% wins over ranked opponents. As a player once said, "I may not like the little son of a *****, but winning with Akers is a lot more fun than losing with Coach Royal". I won't discuss Coach Campbell. He was a great coach and better man. I did not want him to be named HC, and applauded Frank Erwin and Governor Shivers for the move they made. If you have such strong feelings, how can you justify the lengths that people were willing to go to get Akers fired? Their actions and plans were totally unconscionable. How many PCs did we have for players to use in 1986? How many tutors for the team? Where was the help with class scheduling? It was our idiot counselor that cost the team Eric Metcalf for the opener because "I made a mistake". Spare me the sanctimonious ******** from those hypocritical sons of *******.
I was present when Jeff Ward put his finger in a reporter's face and growled, "you can question the man's play calling if you want to. But don't EVER question that man's character". The politics of this job are so dark and have only gotten worse since that point. Making what Mack accomplished here all that more amazing. Sometimes "feeding the monster" (Switzer's description of his hiring and firing at OU), makes you need to take a shower.
