Watching rewind with Tom Herman...When he was commenting on OWENS' OR LEWIS' blind-side block penalty that took us froM the TCU 48 to inside our own 15.....He said," We need to educate our players on the new rules of blocking, etc." WTH TOM ? How about educating them on DO NOT BLOCK BEHIND THE FOOTBALL !!!!!!!!! THAT GUY AIN'T MAKING THE TACKLE ANYWAY, SO LEAVE HIM ALONE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just don't get it caryhorn. Look at the teams with historically great D's last few years. Bama/Clemson. They're not running this scheme. Does it matter if it's a different conference? No of course not. I think 10 years ago it mattered when Bama had 260lb inside linebackers. They were built to stop power run and vulnerable to the spread. But not anymore. They still run the 4-3 but are much faster at the LB position. In 2010 NC game I knew we could score on them because there was no one to cover Ship in the slot. We went right down the field on them before Colt got hurt. But both them and Clemson have speed in their back 7 now. But to get a pass rush you need a push in the middle and great edge rushers. Rak/Kindle types. We haven't had those type players, but it's hard to get them in this scheme either.

They show their *** on defense again in one or two games and, though they win the Big 12 title, may be WAY out of the running for the CFP. After the way the season started, they were thinking playoffs no doubt. Still games to be played but make no mistake, they got run over by K-State like we ran them over last year.

Put me in this camp. Some of the same people pointing out the impatient, want it now, flakiness of these younger generations and players are the same ones calling for THs head. ...Absurd on almost any reasonable level. Put me in the camp of those who like the old way of doing things (and I'm only 46)....
Make a commitment, stick together, work hard, learn as you go, and build something...and have peace of mind and some fun knowing you are doing it that way.
Same people want to run TH are the same people who want to dump their spouse because she or he isnt making the cut and then go find some other one who wont make the cut either...then probably another.
Fact is, there are alot of places with a more desirable fan base right now than what we've become.
The same people who wanted to run Mack, then Charlie (I voted for that one) and were hoping someone would come in and improve/stabilize the program....go to a better bowl game and get back to 9 or 10 wins got too big for their britches after the progress last year and now demand perfection or else.
No, I'll side with TH, the players, the program and the school here...
Plenty of room to learn, to get better, to grow and things to improve....but it's our team, our coach and players and I'll stand and FIGHT.
You guys pounding the table and saying we deserve better sound worse than some of these cry-baby recruits.
    Ask yourself one simple question...
What attitude and course of action would produce the best result at this moment in time??
...I suggest each of you sit down and write a nice letter of support and encouragement to the players, staff, coaches and administration affirming loyalty and support...whether you feel like it or not.

Make a commitment and work through the problems sounds great. That was not what I was hearing about Charlie and it's because the consensus was he was in over his head. Do we still believe in Herman? This fan base wants a program that resembles the top SEC teams year in and year out. Is he on that level. I'm not so sure. Did we hire and pay him $5 million per year to learn on the job?

This is a tired fan base. Tired of not being the Vince Young and Colt McCoy era Texas. It's dragging out and now we're seeing signs of attrition that could dog this team for years to come.

Is it just the injuries? Is that all it is? Why did Sam have the worst game of his career pop up all of a sudden? Is that solely on him? At one point Orlando seemed to be a threat to leave and there was some concern about that. Now he's an idiot. Does that make sense?

    This is a good post...
....one with more questions than answers.
There is plenty to question, but the tone and message from some UT fans right now is unhealthy and ridiculous in my opinion.
On Sam......just looks to me like the offense started getting off track for whatever reason going back to the WVU game. Just looks slow, bogged down, and inexplosive. I read nothing more into Sam's performance than he is growing impatient and started trying to force some things out of desperation because nothing is really working right now.

Teams' OCs have figured him out, and he is not adjusting. THAT is what is happening. Ask any high school coach in Texas, and they will say the same thing.

I am not giving up on this team...not even close....
But we must get better at making in-game adjustments. In my view, this has been a weakness during the TH era and has been exposed lately as one of the biggest hindrances to our success.

I’m waiting for my Scottish customers to get back from lunch. What do Scottish people eat for lunch? Anyway, adjustments ARE important and like others I know they are needed and hope to see them when we get closer to full strength against KSU. Adjustments is one thing, firing a bunch of coaches is another.

I have an idea. Even though we can’t tackle anyone, can’t pressure a QB, can’t cover a receiver, can’t field a punt (much less run one back for plus yardage) and have the worst defense in the program’s history, let’s all hold hands and sing Kumbaya.

And we better not ever question a Texas HC again. Oh, the shame.

Sounds like a Sylvester Looney Tunes episode when he and his son (Junior?) mistake a baby kangaroo for a mouse. The kangaroo keeps pummeling Sylvester to the point that Junior puts a bag on his head and says "There goethz the kid whothz fahthur got beaten up by a mouthz…...The shame"....

Your post is making HUGE generalizations. And I mean HUGE. I don't want TH gone, I want him to fix the program. What is concerning is we're on year 3 in this D and he's not fixing it. As to your generalizations, I've been critical of TH and want TO just flat out gone. But guess what. I'm 59, been married to the same women for 33. Been watching Texas football since I was a tot. Went to UT, 2 of my kids went to UT. Lots of my money has gone there.

But I don't like the D scheme. Don't like it at all. I see no evidence that it's a good scheme. Plenty that it's a bad one. That's my issue, that these guys that get paid millions can't seem to see what's so obvious to everyone else. OU ditches the scheme and they are significantly better in one year. Not like incoming freshman are making that big a difference. Doing it with the same guys that were on the team last year.

And no I'm not writing any letters. You think my boss is throwing kisses at me if we blow a multi-million dollar sale? No he wants it fixed. It's the way the world works when you have a high profile job. Protecting the players I get. They are barely adults and aren't getting paid.

If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. He accepted the job, he is getting paid 5 million a year. Results are expected.

As for the injury excuse. I have a big problem with it. You see 8 of our top 11 tacklers are DBs. 3 are linebackers. This is what happens when the dline and linebackers aren't making plays. More specifically the dline. I can guarantee you a lot of those injuries would not have happened if we were getting production from our dline, but no we think we can use a 3 man rush that can't get close to the QB. then we think we can bring a DB from a mile away and are surprised when he is no where close to the QB. We don't have the people to run a 3 man front. We have 8 DTs on this dline. The only guys that are legit DEs are Bimage and maybe Roach. Everyone else is a DT/NG.

Coburn, Ojomo, Graham, Chisholm, Sweat, Wilbon, Carson, and Christmas-Giles are all DTs/NGs.

None of them have the ability to play DE. So what do we do, we play them there anyways, and the results are a bunch of guys that can't get the job done so tackles are made by the DBs and they are dropping like flies.

Sorry, but if you get robbed because you left your front door open, whose fault is it? If your DBs are getting hurt because they are making all the tackles, whose fault is that?

Austin you brought back a funny memory. My HS was so small one Spring camp our coach had to play a safety position to have enough guys for the scrimmage - I was the other one (we ran two safety’s and the other kid had a broken collar bone). My recollection comes because he chewed out the DL yelling “Hess and I are making all the tackles,” “that’s not how this is supposed to work,” gave them hell - was my finest HS moment, seriously.

Good points Bill. TH has to get this figured out. Nobody here is a DC but TO has high marks among coaches and TH thinks we need more time and depth. You can also walk up 2 LB’s outside the 2 DE’s and show a 5 man front. I’ve seen that but we still get gashed in the running game. They really need some elite pass rushers but those guys are thinking SEC, BIG10. Being in this conference makes it hard to recruit the type of DE you/we want. That also plays a factor. I think they have about 14 months to figure it out.

    Well said.
I said the same thing weeks ago. The three man dline scheme is getting our dbs hurt. I'd like to see us go to a four-man defensive line, I think we would get better pressure on the QB. Also, one thing I can't stand to see, is when one of our Dbs rush the quarterback and they just run into a lineman and play patty-cake why don't they make some kind of fake move to the left and then go to the right, try to get around the blocker instead of playing patty-cake. They only have so much time to get to the QB. And use stunts with the four-man defensive line everybody else does with good results. My 90 year old grandma knows this.

It's real simple. $5 million is $5 million. The expectations of the University were well known to Herman. The "unfair" fan base is not going away. The tough questions will be asked. He is not being paid to learn on the job. In year three we already have three losses. Lincoln Riley is being mentioned as a candidate for the Cowboys job. Anyone hear of Herman being tossed around as a modern coach in the mold of the Rams or 49rs coach?

From where I sit all I hear is crickets including any mention of DBU or Texas is back. The buzz needs to be reignited quickly. I don't know that he can this year. We could very easily lose at least one more game. That's four losses. A regression. How does that sell to recruits? What is your story on turning this around? What can you point to? What is your plan? How are you schematically superior to what other coaches run? What big money edge are you providing? Are you only a program that wins on talent alone?

That's not going to cut it.

I don’t care what they pay TH. Regardless of the school or Head Coach’s salary, fr and sophomore DB’s are going to screw up.
A lot. 4 upperclassmen on the 2 deep roster playing defense. That means we will be fortunate to go 8-4. How old the two deep roster is has nothing to do with anyone’s salary or what school this is. Your arguments need to be fact based not opinion based. Facts are we have 18-19 yr old DB’s screwing up all over the field. One of our punt returners is that young too. I will give you the fact that we need a new ST Coach this offseason upcoming. True that.
I bet we don’t get any other new coaches this spring outside of ST. I also bet we do much better on D next year. I don’t think scheme is as much an issue as some of you are assuming. You can walk up 2 LB’s and have a 5 man front. You guys can flame me all the way back to San Antonio but the scheme argument is a straw man.

Are the 6 Freshmen playing for Bama screwing up like our Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors are ? They have 7 Freshmen on their 2 deep ( 4 starting ) They have 8 Sophomores ( 2 starting ). 8 of the 12 special teams players are Freshmen and Sophomores for Bama. I know they are talented, but why are they not screwing up like ours are ? Why do our players look like Ned and the first reader ? I'll answer it..Coaching !!!!!
