Here is Roach on John/Wheaton --
Also, adding Brandon Harris is starting to work out very well for us, we need to hang on to him
LJ Johnson -- The four-star running back from Cy-Fair is a guy Texas has been working on a ton, and we detailed last week that no school was recruiting him harder. That effort appears to be paying off as a key source near Johnson told 247Sports that Texas holds the edge. This is a pretty big development as sources near Johnson told Horns247 back in the spring that (aggy) held a pretty clear lead. There were rumors that Johnson was close to shutting his recruitment down, but our digging didn’t find anything imminent. It seems like Texas is putting itself into a strong position here and if the staff keeps pushing, they could get him to move his timeline up from the fall.
—There have been a lot of questions on how this will affect Camar Wheaton. The simple answer is that the two are independent recruitments. They don’t know each other or talk. I spoke with a source near Wheaton today to take the temperature on how Johnson’s interest would change his recruitment, and I was told that any rumors of another commit wouldn’t move any. In fact, I was told that Wheaton would probably love for someone to make his decision easier. I’d like to think that Texas would take both guys if they could, but numbers are going to be tight and it’s unlikely one would want to follow the other. I haven’t been told anything for sure, but my gut tells me that the likelihood of grabbing both is probably low.
—Regardless, Johnson or Wheaton would be a massive pick up for Texas. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but both have legitimate speed, and Johnson has a power component to his game that sets him apart. Texas is prioritizing both to continue adding depth and talent to the running back room. One key component in this recruitment is assistant running backs coach Brandon Harris. The former LSU quarterback has been generating some buzz with several running back recruits over the past few weeks. I’m going to have a full background story on Harris tomorrow.
