seem to be when we get away from the actual play that was called. One of our best plays last night was when GG was running for his life and Fozzy turn up field and GG found him wide open for about 40 to 50 yards. This seemed to be the case a lot when VY was here. Colt and Jordan seem to be coaches on the field and seem to know where they needed to be once the ball was snapped. Not saying our OC never calls good plays, but some of our biggest moments this past decade on offense is when we get away from the actually play call.
Hpslugga, Do you remember 2003 against Tech? We were down with less than 2 minutes in the game and the play was called for Roy to do a hook at about 10 yards. Roy tells Chance in the huddle if the hook isn't there that he is going to continue to go downfield. The hook wasn't there and Chance hit Roy over the top for about a 50 yard gain. We scored a couple of playes later. But for Roy to feel the need to tell Chance that in the huddle in the first place tells me he had his doubts as well.
^ Perfect example. Another perfect example was that pump fake TD that Simms threw to BJ in the 2002 Aggy game. That was not a called play, in fact Greg Davis has gone on record as saying he believes a pump fake is "unsound football."
I just want to never hear the words "waitiing for the play to develop" again. I want it to look like our RBs are going forward in more than low gear. I no longer believe that holes develop for the UT OL. I just want a pass to be something that doesn't require a 5 second squint. If you watch other teams they seem to be going full speed and they seem to look like everyone knows what the play is and where it is going. We seem to look like we just want to be pleasantly surprised by a successful 3 yd out. I want a game plan that is based both offensive and defensive strengths and weaknesses of our opponents. I don't want to ever hear that the plays are called without regard to personnel in the game... Without meaning to be offensive, that should be an acceptable definition for retarded!
Gilbert's a good athlete with a lot of potential. I don't fault him for everything that's happened this season anymore than I fault Landry for throwing 5 INTs at Nebraska last season, or with similar struggles. Carson Palmer struggled in multiple offensive systems and was considered a disappointment his first three seasons before Norm Chow came on staff in 2003 at SC.
I wonder how much of Colt to Shipley was designed or just those two being on the same page and simply reading the defense? The 09 offense was as limp dick as this one, Texas just had the benefit of a 4yr starter with a high football IQ and pinpoint accuracy.
I can't remember the sportswriter who wrote it, but during our national championship year, he pointed out that Texas greatest offensive production took place when the intended play broke down and Vince Young just took off running. Can anybody figure out a way to get Vince his senior year eligibility back?
The original post is dead-on. In fact, against Baylor (Baylor!), we were in the 3rd quarter before we could muster up an offensive TD, and that came on an ad-libbed QB scramble. I know-- all teams get points now and then after the play breaks down, but against TERRIBLE defenses (and we got stymied by some awful defenses this year), the Greg Davis offense cannot execute a play like it's drawn up for a score.
This season is a blessing in disguise. GD will finally be gone and we can get on down the road without him.
