If the Aggies want to leave, they shouldn't allow the door to hit them in the butt. They can be replaced, with say Houston. Of course Houston isn't of the same stature as that of Aggy, but they aren't that far off either. I doubt the SEC really wants Aggy anyway. They want 5-7 Texas over Aggy. Should Aggy go, I'd be all for it.
Richard Justice is a pen-weilding fool and he knows it. I read that this morning and puked up last night's enchiladas. The idea that the ags control anything is ludicrous.
If a&m wants to go then they should go. I think most UT alums are in agreement, as long as the OU game remains in place we are content.
Justice definitely sucks up to different fanbases and turns a feather extremely quickly. The statement that A&M holds all the cards is definitely far-fetched. One interesting thing that he does bring up is the Longhorns going independent. If that is truly the desire then there is more merit to his statement about A&M... While I wish we would have made the jump to the SEC, we needed the money that the Big 12 promised.
A&M has a better football program? Seriously? Kansas City has a better program than Indianapolis right? They are having a better season this year after all...
I think that once Texas and OU both have their networks up and running, that they both go independent in football, remaining in the Big 12 for all other mens and womens sports. Both would demand and likely get the Notre Dame clause, finish in the top 10 of the final BCS regular season poll and get a BCS bid (not sure what ND's current magic number is, but you get the idea). We continue to play OU the second saturday of October at Fair Park. Do a rotating home and home with the Service Acadamies (a November game at West Point, on the banks of the Hudson.....what a great trip). And keep making an offer, well publisized to "our friends in the state capital" of Nebraska for a home and home. Watch in Hig Def on the LSN as both Pelini and Osborne's head explode. Think GO BIG RED (mist). I'm just sayin......
Personally, I don't want to see Aggie go because it's a rivalry I enjoy. I know way more Aggies than Sooners, so the UT/A&M game is more fun to watch with the guys than the OU game. That being said, I'm pretty sure the only two programs that can really dictate any say so in this conference right now are Texas and OU. That's just how it is, sorry if the truth hurts.
i agree with you about texas being able to call their shots. but ou is a follower, and has indicated as such. they'll do whatever texas does, and are likely going to be reactive rather than proactive.
Yellow Journalism and its working wonderfully. Look at the section of the HC that this was published in? The Longhorn section. When talent fails, stir the pot with the talent you lack. You have taken the hook and are going for a ride.
Justice cracks me up. It looks like he needed a piece to turn in before the big xii title game and typed this up at the last minute and wanted to rile some feathers. his premise is faulty because you could make the same claim if okie st., tech, or missouri left, etc. Also, I'm not really sure A&M received a stand alone invite to the SEC. I think the offer was conditional upon OU's acceptance and it would have been a mistake anyway for A&M to go it alone. A&M would never be better than Arkansas in that conference and they cant beat them now so they would really be more like kentucky without the basketball pedigree. A&M had a good season at 9-3, cotton bowl berth and they beat ou, tx and nebraska in the same season. they definitely had a better season than tx, but this hyperbole of having a better "program" is kind a joke. Let's compare football revenue and then get back to me and let me know if A&M could get any coach it wants to move to college station. I'm still curious how A&M showed it "isnt married to anyone" since they stayed and couldnt leave. I also like Osborne's comment that NU wouldnt have left it could have kept its rivalry with OU. That is a laugh. You know they are worried about the move to the Big X. They are the new Illinois of that conference. Have fun big red. He is right about one thing, unless the BIg XII is aggressive and tries to expand, it will die. It needs a big december game. They need to move TX/OU to the end of the season.
My only uneasiness with aggy leaving, if they really did have an invitation, is that it would tend to "open up" Texas even further for the SEC recruiting-wise. As if CBS has not done enough of that already. Other than that issue, aggy is free to go in my book. Better hire a songwriter if you do leave though.
The writer is just talking **** to get Aggie readers excited and Texas readers pissed off. That said, there is certainly a big % of Aggies who'd like to go to the SEC, and there's no doubt that the SEC would like to get into the Texas TV markets. So could the Aggies be the domino that starts the obviously-tenuous Big "12" falling? Sure, they could. The SEC would also love to have OU. Not inconceivable that the SEC would fall over itself to add both.... nor inconceivable that both would be willing to listen. But those facts don't make the Aggies the kings of anything -- it just makes them the school most likely to flee the shadow of Daddy. Edit: I think it would be an understatement to say that Mizzou is less than fully dedicated to this league. They're arguably the most likely defector at this point (and their departure takes away the KC/St Louis TV markets and makes the Big 12 start to look like the SWC Part II).
Any one of the three of Texas, OU or Aggies bolting on their own spells the end of the road for the new Big 12. So, to an extent, the article is correct. However, the notion that after an 8-4 season and a win over a diminished UT football team makes the Ags the new king makers is fantasy.
I would have liked to see Texas and OU jump over to the Pac10 and leave a$m to go to the SEC. The aggys couldn't win in the B12 and they damn sure weren't going anywhere in the SEC, and won't if they end up over there.
I would have liked to see Texas and OU jump over to the Pac10 _________________________________________________ going out west and playing in the atmosphere of half filled stadiums would have been awesome.
Up to now, UT has wanted to keep aggie in its future plans. But this benefits aggie way more than UT. It makes aggie look and feel important, and gives aggie the chance to "dump" UT. UT should go forward without aggie. Then aggie would control nothing (except for the refs).
OU controls NOTHING. The state of Texas and its in habitants "manage" the Big XII especially with the vacuum that will be left when Nebraska leaves. Small market state and small market school. OUs game will be the lowest rated BCS game. Not only because they play UCONN but because no one really cares. There are Horns and Aggies all over the place across the country but OU is a different story...
Its hard to imagine any conference choosing OU over A&M with that all of that Aggie tradition and fanbase. Surely TX realizes its REAL rival is A&M and should let the OU game go away.
