Grove Cafe Machine Shed (a small chain, nearest one probably at Urbandale, on the other side of Des Moines) Lots of good options in Kansas City, notably BBQ and Stroud's for world-class fried chicken.
For local food, try Hickory Park. It is a good BBQ place, long-time Ames landmark, and the kind of place everyone in Ames takes visitors - but just don't be expecting TX-style BBQ or you will be disappointed. Or if you're looking for drinks and pub fare, go to Olde Main Brewing Co. Really good beer selection, brewed on-site.
