in total wins or losses first? Darrell was 167-47-5. Mack is 141-39. With decent seasons in the near future, his winning would obviously pass Royal within 3 years (averaging about 9 wins). I guess the bigger question is whether we'd have enough losses in those seasons to add up to 8. I'll be the optimist and say he passes DKR in the win column first. I'd be shocked if we went back to losing more than 4 games in seasons for the next couple years.
Amazing how similar their records are. DKR with more conference and national championships still will always be the icon but Mack is making a place for himself in the pantheon of Texas oaching legends.
How lucky we have been with Mack. When we think about aggy and their coaching struggles, we have had much of the same problem. David was a favorite son and just couldn't pull it off and then we had the Mackovic disaster (in so many areas, although he did win a B12 title). Then Mack comes along and immediately changes the attitude of all of us, the image of UT, and so much more. He has been a Godsend. The next guy has huge shoes to fill.
I think Brown will get the wins first, but his conference and MNC wins will lag behind Royals record. Royal won seven conference championships in a row, but didn't have to compete against the sooners to do it. But he did have to deal with the hogs, and that was no easy road. As always, it'll be fun to watch.
If we say 9-4 next year then say 10-3 in 2013 It will come down to the ou game in 2014. If we can produce a 10 win year next year and follow that up with an 11 win season, that would make it for the wins
I also am much more interested in conference and national championships. Those reflect truly great seasons and wins over quality teams. Championships, thats what makes Texas stand out.
It doesn't demean Mack to say that Coach Royal will always be the gold standard for UT football coaches. Matter of fact, I suspect Mack would be the first to second that statement. IF Mack wins a couple more championships, he will be almost at DKR's level, and that's not a bad place to be. Mack's certainly made his place near the top of the Texas coaching tree.
Agreed- let's have Mack win 2 more NCs and then we can start comparing him to DKR. I'll chip in for the statue and naming of a building too, I'll just wait for those 2 more NCs first.
If we really catch lightening in a bottle...we only lose 3 in the next three seasons, two next year one in ´13 and an undefeated ´14 for the MNC and then Mack is #1 in my book!
I think he passes DKR in losses first. What I would like to see is Mack leaving with a tie with DKR in wins, but I haven't looked at the numbers to see how far-fetched that is. Wouldn't it be great to somehow go 11-1 next year, make it to the MNC game, win the game, and Mack to retire with the cupboard absolutely stinkin' full of talent? Unfortunately for us, the one loss will almost certainly be two, OU and KSU. I can predict an extremely exciting game with TCU, so there is the chance for three losses. I dont' see us losing more than 3.
