I agree more with you, than you think I do, about the coaches getting out of VY way and letting him play his game. But, I also note the significant passing improvement each year from 2003 to 2005 that made a difference in his playmaking ability. Other teams did not have a chance to defend him when his passing improved. Not so, early on.
The offense that Simms ran vs the offense that Young and Mock ran were night and day. I don't ever remember or barely remember Simms taking many snaps from the spread or shotgun formation. To have changed the offense to a more running QB style in 2002 would have been just plain stupid.
I agree the spread run by VY opened up alot of passing opportunities that made it pretty much unstoppable. But, again, his passing had to improve to make that happen. And as his passing improved, along with the offensive pass play options, HE BLOSSOMED.Ha! I don't really know the how, who or why his passing improved and I am not giving anyone credit(implied or otherwise) for the improvement. I just watched and can remember the progress.
Any discussion like this is really just one person's opinion against another. There is no way to prove your point by bringing up a few games or moments that this player failed in some way. Everyone watched VY's last season as a Longhorn. While he did have some future NFL players around him, he clearly was the main reason for the undefeated season. If it was possible to ask some of the best coaches in college football. Bob Stoops, Nick Saban, Les Miles, Urban Meyer, and even Pete Carroll, which player they would rather not have to prepare to play aganst, I believe that VY would be the answer they would give. Much more than a RB like Earl, Ricky, Bush, Ingram, ........ Tebow or Cam Newton would be the only players that would compare to VY. We all knew that if the defense could get the ball back one more time against USC, that VY would win the game. He was at his best when his team needed hime the most. No RB can really match that.
newton, i aqree w/; regardless of his ******** heisman, tebow couldn't hold VY's jock as a college QB
Vince did the smart thing by going pro when he did. Had he come back for his senior year he may well have been greater than Earl. But he didn't.
