Baylor 4th and 4 - DB's???

Are there any coaches out there that can explain to me why, on that 4th and 4 play for Baylor, that our DB on the right edge would be showing blitz and leaving the Baylor WR WIDE OPEN, with a safety playing 15+ yards off the line? Is there any reason to be playing anything other than press man under coverage in that situation with maybe cover 2 tight with the safeties?

Baylor even pulled up to get the play call TWICE, while the WR is waving frantically at Florence that he is not covered whatsoever. That gave us two opportunities to have the DB get back onto the WR, but he never moved.

Result? quick strike to the WR, right at the first down marker.

Even Chris Spielman saw the receiver and pointed out the unbelievable cushion on live tv prior to the snap. The win was the only thing that kept my dinner from coming back up. That was hard to watch.

Well maybe seeing Muschamp take the Gators to the national title game in his 3rd season. That might be harder to stomach.

But if you tell it like it is, you're not a "fan" of Texas [IMG]

As I recall, Spielman noted that Mack was yelling at Manny on the sidelines at that point, the presumption being that Mack wanted to know the exact thing you're asking.

I spoke to a former high school football coach. He said that if the secondary is afraid that the receiver may break a tackle and take it to the house, they play sort of soft. The philosophy being its better to give up a few yards as opposed to giving up a TD!

If you are "afraid" of anything, you shouldn't be out there. The winning tradition of the University of Texas will not be enstrusted to the timid or the weak.

So I count 10 guys in that picture. I'm assuming that we're in a two-deep and the 11th guy is the near-side safety who is off screen? It almost looks more like everyone but the near-side DB thinks we're in man and he thinks we're in zone... or he's being "clever" and trying to bait a throw (which would be really stupid) or fake a blitz.

I sincerely doubt that the call involved leaving one guy uncovered.

This wasn't the only time I saw that D. Saw it several times. Screaming at my TV on the 4th downs to get up on someone. If they beat us over the top so be it, but you can't give up a 4th down play.

has to be a blown assignment.

it would maybe make sense if the ball was on the other hash leaving the DB much less space to have to cover to make the sack.

that has to be a blown assignment.

Am I the only one who thinks, since their TB was walking forward as the ball was snapped, that they should have been flagged for illegal motion, making it fourth and nine?

This defense is all over the place.

I really don't think Manny _iaz has an effing clue as to what to do now.

Offenses have figured out how to attack his gambling schemes, and the man's only answer is to yield 10 yards on every play in order to prevent quick scores. (and we still allow quick scores on top of it)

The man must feel like the captain of the Titanic right now. Or Kate Winslet.

By the way, what is our record over the last 3 games on 4th down defense? I was keeping count till it was 5 of 6 (conversion allowed) at some point against VW, and then saw some 2 or 3 straight against OU and I didn't want to count anymore. Then more crap like above (multiple times) against Baylor. It must be some unbelieveable 12 of last 16 or something, right? In fact, but for a couple of bad throws, we basically have not stopped more than a couple of 4th downs on us in the last 15+ attempts, I guess.

I don't even remember a measurement in any of those 4th downs, to boot. Totally uncontested. Easy passes to WRs with nobody within 10 yards, RBs running through elephant-holes, or our DLs freight-train-pushed silly.

This is just incredibly mind-boggling stuff that we are witnessing. Anybody has the stats on this? Thanks.
