I don't know what happened this year, but he's got a great and pretty consistent track record as our DBs coach overall.
some might disagree but i still believe the Db's coverage is good, but tackling is horrible. If they do end up getting rid of Diaz I would love to see Akina get his chance at DC
A great man and a great position coach. Not a great coordinator, imo. And, contrary to popular opinion, he does teach them to wrap up. They're just not wrapping . . .
We need a Michael Griffin or ET in the worst way. A safety that can cover, get picks, and hits like a freight train.
I sometimes think being a defensive back coach must be the most frustrating job in football. You can coach someone in all the right techniques, get them to understand their assignments and put them in position to make a play, only to see 1. the player trips and gives up a TD, 2. the player plays the ball and not the receiver 3. the player plays the receiver and not the ball 3. the player plays exactly how he should and gets flagged, 4. the player does everything right but the throw is simply too good. I remember how talented that secondary was against USC, and they were still getting shredded. Obviously it's even tougher when you don't have as much talent as that.
As inept as Larry McDuff/Akina's 2007 squad was, they were better than thsi one hands down. And its not even close. Larry McDuff disappeared that season. I wonder what it will take for Manny Diaz to disappear? Is there like a Witness protection Program for coordinators they can shuffle him off to?
