Since most of the recruiting sites started keeping tabs on players about 10 years ago (we'd probably have to use Dave Campbell's in order to go back further), here's our "best of" team made up of 3-star players or worse from that time period. I'm liberally using whichever site (Scout, Rivals, etc.) that actually ranked the kid lowest... not an average. Overall it's a decent team, especially because of who's the starting QB and some of the individuals we have at DE and OL. Our glaring weakness would be WR, but with a line like that, we might run a bit more spread game with Ramonce and hopefully he's not in jail. QB Colt McCoy David Ash Case McCoy RB Ramonce Taylor (what could have been...) C. Ogbonnaya Joe Bergeron Tre Newton WR Nate Jones ** Marquise Goodwin ** I think Dustin Miksch might have caught a pass in a game once, but that was about it. Shows how thin our WR recruiting has been. Or it shows how even though we get some big names in recruiting, we don't coach them up to all be Shipleys and Cosbys and Williamses. TE Neale Tweedie Barrett Matthews OT Adam Ulatoski J. Cochran D. Hawkins OG/C Kasey Studdard C. Tanner C. Hall ** G. Porter C. Dockery T. Ashcraft DE Orakpo B. Robison S. Acho ** DT K. Randall D. Lokey B. Alexander ** LB E. Acho R. Muckelroy ** R. Bobino Scott Derry CB Ryan Palmer Brandon Foster S Michael Griffin Blake Gideon * Marcus Griffin Erick Jackson K H. Lawrence J. Tucker P. Trevor Gerland
Blake Gideon was a 2 star recruit and 4 time Big-12 honorable mention safety. He started 52 straight games at Texas and at last report was on the Denver Broncos practice squad. He had his detractors, but I think he was as good as at least one of those safeties you have listed.
Yeah I had him written down and totally forgot to throw him in there because I was so excited that Michael Griffin was a 3-star. I'd put Gideon ahead of Marcus Griffin based on experience and his honorable mention alone. Edited to fix it.
Ahh yes. You are correct. He was 3-star by Rivals and no stars from Scout so he definitely applies. He just wasn't listed on either recruiting class chart by either site. Thanks for the catch! Fixed on the depth chart. It truly doesn't make up for the fact that our WR recruiting hasn't been great.
Guys I might include- Nathan Jones at WR. Sam Acho at DE. Chris Hall- All over the OL. Not terribly talented, but versatile. Rod Muckelroy at LB. Ben Alexander at DT. Pretty good player kinda lost in the shufflle at a deep position. I'm curious who would rank guys like Michael Griffin, Kasey Studdard, and Brian Orapko as 3 stars. Smoking the good stuff.
Nate Jones was borderline 4-star (Rivals had him lower) so I'll include him. Edited. Acho was the same (4 by one and 3 by the other) so I'll get him on there too. I was wondering why I had E. Acho but not Sam. Edited. Not sure why I forgot Chris Hall. I had him written down on my sheet that I was going through and never put his name on the list. Edited. Muckelroy was another that was 4-star by one service but not the other. Not sure why I didn't see him when I was going over the 2nd time. Edited. I think I left off Alexander because he didn't contribute much. I see him right here on the list I wrote down but when I was typing it up, I passed him over. Edited.
