I know the sentiment and reasoning is good and I am 100% behind it, but I can't help but feel this week's uniform choice is somehow appropriate for our game with Kansas State and Coach Snyder. The Link: Saturday's Big 12 Opener Serves as Cancer Awareness Game Even the headline is wrought with almost overt symbolism.
Pink should never be on any uniform. Looks terrible. I don't care what the cause is. If the Horns want to promote a cause that involves the color pink, perhaps the entire team can roll an enormous pink ball the length of the field before the game.
I wish the program would stick to football. This kind of stuff may be important, but seems out of place and is a distraction from the mission. I'll catch hell too, but there are endless other ways to promote those important issues. The first 2 minutes of Macks presser was about this.
I'm all for breast cancer awareness (right now my sister-in-law is battling invasive breast cancer and is due to undergo a bilateral mastectomy in 5 days). But the football field...or at least our football unis...is not the place for this, IMO. I'd rather see Mack donate some of his millions to breast cancer research. If Mack and/or the suits in Austin feel we need to get the players involved, then how about some kind of fund-raiser not associated with a game? Or have the guys run in a relay race during one of those marathons or half-marathons to raise $ for cancer research?
I can't stand it. The program can make a halftime donation, run ads on the jumbotron and in the stadium, but pink all over the unis of a violent game??? Gimme a break. And I'm certainly not cancer insensitive for solid reasons. There are many other ways to accomplish getting the word out (what that even helps I'm not sure). i think the NFL has cancer awareness month and does it the entire month. Imagine breaking an all-time record and on the run, pass, or catch they replay over and over in history...you are draped in pink and not your team's real colors. That's awful.
I have no problem with promoting breast cancer awareness, but why don't sports organizations promote prostate or testicular cancer awareness?
In the article it says the players have a choice of colored ribbons on the helmet... Pink = Breast, Yellow = Testicular, Purple = All else That's way overboard. Looks like brain got a raw deal and is sharing purple ribbon with prostate. The program can't even get their head out of their ____ for this cause either.
I realize it is a good cause and all, but it looks to me like someone is trying to candy up the work clothes.
Who exactly is this going to "make aware" of cancer? I don't beleive I know anyone that is not aware of cancer. I dont beleive I know of anyone that has not been affected by this terriblle affliction by either having cancer or losing someone to cancer. I seriously doubt putting pink on football uniforms in any football league or other sport is going to make anyone more aware of cancer. Just another bad idea that gets a pass because people are afraid to be politically incorrect and say it is stupid and a waste of time.
Is this thread serious? This has done for years at the high school, college and pro football level. This has nothing to do with performance on the field. If it does, then we have bigger problems in the first place.
And neither of the two designated cancers is the number one or two cancer killer among men and women (combing sexes). Gender unique number two for men in prostate and number two for women is breast. Lung is by far number one and colon is second for combined. I'm all for cancer awareness, believe me. But testicular cancer deaths ain't even on the radar.
Ok. I'm gonna go ahead and say it. Enough of the pink crap! Enough! Period! I'm all for cancer awareness and all that. Actually, I think we are already aware. I've lost loved ones to cancer and a few to breast cancer specifically. It sucks! I hope they eradiate it soon. But, to have football players wear pink does absolutely nothing to aid the cause. It just looks silly. Why not just hang a few banners that "remind" us of the ravages of cancer in general? Why just breast cancer? Why pink? I guess it's all part of the feminization of the culture. I know some may flame me with ridiculous accusations of being uncaring to the cause, but that's not it. If wearing pink shoes, jock, helmet, cup, shirt, etc . . . would save one life I'd be all for it. But, it doesn't and it won't. It's just overblown almost to the point of being a fad. Other than that, I have no real opinion on the topic.
I mentioned just wearing the little ribbon stickers on the helmets, but it might also be a good idea to hand out ribbon pins at the game. That way people would have something to associate with the cause after the game is over. I also like the idea of banners and perhaps a message on the Jumbotron, but covering the players in this stuff is a bit much.
So no one hear realizes that the Susan G. Komen foundation gets a percentage from the sale of the pink gear. Football players(most popular sport in US and highest rated TV in the US) are basically walking billboards to sell this stuff, which part of the money goes to cancer research. Not to mention that this is far more affective than some banners that you'll probably never see on TV. They win.
Yeah, I'm sure all the kids on the block are going to run out and get some pink shoes and pink wrist bands after the game.
I've had cancer. I appreciate the gesture. If we play like crap tomorrow, it won't because of cancer ribbons.
I think this is awesome! I lost my Mom, Aunt, Uncles, Grandmother to cancer, and I wear a pink bracelet to support the cause. If the team wants to diddy themselves up in pink..... so be it!! They could be in pink tutus for all I care!! I just want them to go out and win!! I think this is a great way to acknowledge the cause and those who make millions should help as well!!
