So, who do you guess will be the next coach?

Craig Bohl has been named new HC at Wyoming after very successful stint at NDSU. So, he is off the available list unless he is enticed into a switcheroo.

I think I'm going to go all in with Chad Morris. Here's a quick background look that goes into the college experience and ties with Malzhan.

My thoughts are this: go young, go off-the-radar with no prior HC, and just take a gamble this may be the best fit for years to come. There is nothing I don't like, and everything I do like. With the right assistants, this could be the way to go. Ten years from now, every program will wish they had him.

Horns prob won't hire someone without HC experience which cute Morris out.

I don't know how much stink Franklin has on him due to the vandy rape situation. He might be a bit toxic right now

Shaw and harbaugh have said they aren't leaving. I don't think Malzahn is either.

Jimbo depends on how had the financial situation is at fsu but he's also geared up for another title run next year.

My money is on jim mora jr.

I am neither for this or against this, but is Kyle Shanahan a possible candidate? Word is he is leaving the Redskins.

Just curious. Flame away if deserved.

I think Malzahn is happy at auburn. I don't think he'd leave solely for a payday.

PropJoe, Malzahn could well be "happier" at Austin, too. There is nothing that says he can't be. It won't be solely the payday that is attractive at Texas, compared to Auburn. Sorry, but you are pushing it there, if you are saying Auburn is Texas.

But yes, serious money will still be needed. He would also need to be convinced that he can have better results in the coming years than he expects to have at Auburn soon. I am sure the guy wants to win after all. So, it may not be easy.

Not at all saying that auburn is the same situation as Texas. Just saying they there has to be another motivator besides money for a coach to leave one good job for another.

Malzahn has a great situation going for him at auburn. He's set up for a decent run with Marshall at qb. Why would he leave for a rebuild at Texas?

Based on what I heard from Patterson at the presser, it would appear that some of the candidates posted here might be off the table. My take is that he will go for someone who has college experience (perhaps extensive), is media savvy, is well connected (recruiting), highly ethical, and someone that will represent the University well. Those comments, if he sticks to them, would seem to indicate that the NFL option would be narrowed, although certainly Carroll and Harbaugh fit the bill. It might also eliminate some of the younger up and comers in the college game. Next, I wonder if someone like Malzahn may not embody the kind of individual we are seeking.

His comments would seem to reinforce the case for folks like Mora, Harbaugh, Carroll (I know, call me crazy), Shaw, Fisher and perhaps Briles and Sumlin. Of that list, the least encumbered as of today might be Mora, not that it would make a difference...

My guess is also that Mora is what would end up happening without much problems, and may be without too many people objecting either. He is a good guy, great personality, recruits well etc.

A couple of interesting articles on Jim Mora that you all may want to read. Here is TJ. Simers of LA Times writing when Mora was hired 2 years back at UCLA
Jim Mora - Good guy, good coach, bad choice for UCLA?

A year later, after he even pulled off a top-10 recruiting class in 2 months flat early last year, and then had a 9-4 season, here is a rundown of what happened, showing how TJ Simer's doubts proved totally unfounded, and in a big hurry too.
How Jim Mora has the Bruins headed to National Spotlight

Now, here is what makes him even more attractive, as a person.
UCLA's Jim Mora picks USC's Ed Orgeron for Pac-12 COY

That is so much like how Mack would do it. He may not make us miss how Mack used to represent the University. Though he is hard-nosed and demands accountability, he makes people like him too.

I am still a little so-so about whether he has the "it" to make judgement calls to have a team go undefeated, etc, but it is hard to make a case against him.

Really don't know and don't have a clue who would be good or not. I am done with the soap opera for now... It will be a new whirl wind of rumors and speculation until the job Id filled.

Nick Saban. I've always said he's not coming, and I still feel that way. But Saban's the best in the college business, and I would start with him. Offer him around $10M per year over 8 years, and make him tell you no.Jim Harbaugh. Scipio Tex seems to think he's interested. If so, I'd take him second only to Saban. Tough-minded and focused on winning. Excellent recruiter. Doubt he'd leave the NFL, or if he did, not for long.
    Gus Malzahn.
Similar to Saban in difficulty to land, what with the NC he's likely to pull off. Brilliant O mind. Wins big wherever he goes. Great get for Texas, but very unlikely.

    Art Briles.
Top motivator. Great O, and can build a good D. Knows Texas and is a second to none recruiter via talent evaluation. I question whether he'd leave Baylor for Texas, however. But if he did, there seems to be sufficient evidence that Briles can win it all at Texas.

    Jimbo Fisher.
3 out of 4 years a 10 game winner. O minded. Excellent recruiter. Like Saban and Mahlzahn, probably a long-shot. 49 years old.

    James Franklin.
Fantastic, and very young (41ish) up and comer. Very good O mind. Terrific recruiter. Can win at Vanderbilt. Photogenic and charismatic motivator. If the top 5 pipe-dreams pass, and when it's time to get serious and hire a coach, I'd take Franklin and not look back. He could be the top guy at Texas for 25 years. This guy could be DKR-like, only as an AA.

    Gary Anderson.
Great, 49 year old nuts and bolts kind of coach. Can beat Alabama. Can win at Utah State and did well at Wisconsin in year 1.

How about Francis? He has made a complete turnaround at the Vatican in less than one year's time. I think he would run a clean program, and be an excellent fund raiser.

A lot of folks are high on Harbough, but for some reason he comes off as a jerk to me.
But if he comes and wins big, I'm sure I'll love him.

    Jim Mora Jr.
Stop the search if we can get him.
Take a look at some of the top recruits even in the south and the east, they are considering UCLA. That should speak to the recruiting piece.
He absolutely seems like a CEO that will demand excellence on both sides of the ball.

I have to second that. Mora is who strikes me as the least risky hire (outside of Malzahn and Jimbo). To me, he seems like the closest in matching Mack Brown's good qualities - friendliness, personality, stress on doing the right things, recruiting, etc. And he is rather specifically known to NOT have the one bad quality Mack had - that of not being demanding enough of his players and assistants

By the way, it was impressive to see UCLA make a comeback a few weeks back against ASU after falling behind 35-13 at the half. They held ASU to 3 pts in the second half and got within 6 points within the next 19 minutes. That kind of ability to motivate players to not give up, and to make half-time adjustments, should be noted. They couldn't pull off the win in the end, as ASU is a tough team too (THEY have a good coach as well). But I was impressed, as I was hearing that game on the radio here in LA as I was driving around for something.

I think the guy is not any being tossed about. It needs to be a surprise,

If not Malzahn , then the guy who is like him.

Chad Morris. If we don't get him, he may end up at OU.

    I'm really tired. Punchy.
