Since the word leaked out, I have been trying to read everything about Charlie Strong I could find. This guy seems to walk it and talk it. Academics will not suffer under this coach. Recruiting will be fantastic under this coach. Toughness and conditioning will be a major part of Texas football. Coaches and players will be held accountable for their performances. I did not expect to find so much positive press in Louisville for the guy that just left, but it's there. Whether the luxury suite guys want to hug it out with him simply doesn't matter. He is a football coach. I think he's going to be a bad *** coach for Texas. I know the days of "Texas is soft" are over. It's about time.
Once I read about "The Pit", I knew he had the right mindset. And I actually think the fact that he's not particularly fond of spending a lot of time speaking in front of a camera is a good thing. Like 1LG wrote, everything I've read about him energizes me about Longhorn football.
Been saying this whole time...wait and see what you get next year from the players who pissed us off for being incompetent and soft last 2 years. Some of these guys are gonna shock us when they get the right discipline, training, and pride introduced to or brought back into their lives. We will be very good, NEXT YEAR. Watch and enjoy!
Imagine going from the older version of passive Mack and annoying Fat Dog, to Coach Strong and this s&c monster. If I was a player I'd be excited, yet nervous as hell about what's coming my way before September.
We can all talk about all the things that are wrong, need and change or fixing, the new coaches, what Strong will do and how he will do it, but IMO this may be THE most important among them: "the days of "Texas is soft" are over"
Who is Charlie Strong? I didn't even know Louieville had a football team!1!! I thought they were a basketball school. Oh, well, go Coach Strong.
None of us have the slightest information to make an intelligent assessment at this time----all we know is what we read and what we read is mostly hogwash, just like the hogwash we have been spoonfed before.
After what I've absorbed since about 10 o'clock Friday night, I consider him the best hire, if not the only meaningful hire, Texas could have made. He represents everything I've been wanting to infect this program now for years. Again, just from what I have absorbed. I realize potential of something is one thing, then the realization (the actualizing) of it, quite another. His presence for 40 min today was the most refreshing thing I've seen since moving back to Austin in 2004. I feel he is the perfect hire. My expectations are good, in other words.
My impression is he means what he says. We might actually see a dip early on as those who are not willing to do the work start jumping off the ship. Interesting times, and for me I find watching the pending change every bit as entertaining as the actual games.
After that press conference, I have no doubt. His attitude is exactly what has been missing from UT football for years. Backdoor Bob has seen his last 60,50 point outing in Dallas.
I posted several times that I was disappointed in this choice. Then over the weekend I posted a few times that I was warming up. I saw the press conference and I was impressed with what he had to say. Mainly I was glad to hear what he had to say about toughness. I actually think that most 18 year old athletes want to be tough. I think that this will actually be an appealing message to them. Since he talked about toughness so much, I think someone talked to him about this being an issue here. Maybe Patterson. I do think that this talk of toughness and the actions that will follow are what is needed here. I was also happy to hear about the respect that he has for the Texas HS football coaches. He seemed very down home and natural and I think that HS coaches will see that this plays very well in living rooms. So now, I am HOT, HOT, HOT. I mean about Strong.
I like CS a lot. I really liked his comments about 3*,4* and 5* players. The next few years will be very interesting, especially as the Big 12 and SEC start playing in the Sugar bowl next year.
I'm coming around. Earlier I had wished for a run at the Auburn Coach (really like his innovation, combativeness) and loved the prospect of watching Mora Jr. on the Longhorn network. Strong is a less colorful entertainer ... but I really like his intensity, his focus on what's importantat and the results on the field and in player graduations. I strongly support the decision to hire him now.
I liked the pit. Were injured players work there other body parts harder then practices. Incentive to get back on the field.
