As one of the 90 National Championships in Football that Ohio State claims, they have now discovered that they were also National Champs in 1970! Surely this is big News to both Texas and Nebraska that did actually win the split Title in 1970.

Now with Ohio State also being NC, the ags will no doubt slap 1970 right up there on the walls of the Pyle next to the 1919 and 1939 titles. Hell it tool them almost a century to remember or figure out that they were "NC" in 1919, so bully for them, they have cut their learning curve (ok, stop the snickering) in half. At this rate, all of the bogus titles that Bama and Notre Dame claim will be over in Hootverille as well.

Texas does not honor all "recognized" MNC's, regardless of what media outlet crowned them. I believe that they only recognize AP and UPI and the BCS. If Texas calculated their number similar to the likes of Alabama and Ohio St., I believe that Texas would have 11 or 12.

I don't know what year tOSU started claiming 1970, but it wasn't this year. Since it comes from the NFF, they may have claimed it since 1970. It is absurd that the NFF crowned two champions that year - Texas and Ohio State. Schools should only claim AP and / or Coaches championships. Prior to 1936, well, that's a bit harder to decide.

crizistre is right. There would have 10 more which would make a total of 14 if we used their criteria. Other years would be 1914, 1918, 1941, 1947, 1950, 1961,1968,1977,1981 and 2008.

As opposed to the Alabama method where they can essentially award themselves national championships after the fact.

Kind of a related question regarding MNCs.

I seem to recall seeing on TV shots of Belmont's trophy area along with Earl and Ricky's Heismans, 4 crystal footballs representing 1963, 1969, 1970, and 2005 MNCs.

But I'm pretty sure the crystal football didn't start until some time after Texas' first three MNCs. Okay, so during this post I searched and found the answer:

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AFCA_National_Championship_Trophy
    From the link above:
    (regarding the crystal football)...

"The official name is the American Football Coaches Association National Championship Trophy; it was given this permanent name by the association in 2006. In 2009, the AFCA allowed universities to buy replica trophies for any year a school finished first in the Coaches' Poll prior to the trophy's creation in 1986.

During the era of the Bowl Championship Series and its predecessors (1992-2013), the BCS did not commission its own official trophy, and so the Coaches' Trophy was presented to the winning team in an on-field ceremony after the title game.[5] With the demise of the BCS, its successor playoff system, the College Football Playoff, commissioned a new trophy for its champion; officials wanted a new trophy that was unconnected with the previous championship system.[6] However, coaches were "adamant" that the AFCA trophy continue to be awarded.[5] Beginning in 2014, the trophy will be awarded to the team ranked No. 1 in the final Coaches' Poll of the season in a ceremony at that team's stadium sometime after the College Football Championship Game.[1]"

So Larry Culpepper can relax, apparently the crystal football is still awarded, in addition to the new one for the playoff championship.

I guess this means that tOSU can claim TWO national championships for this past year, the AFCA crystal ball AND Larry Culpepper's playoff championship?

Bill, please contact Steve Patterson. We need to get those other 10 on the stadium and equipment trailer ASAP!

Preferably this weekend to impress the recruits.
