Sports Illustrated says it's done, and he is hired as DL coach at Florida -The Link

But 247sports and other Texas sources say no (at least not yet). Our new DT recruit DuVonta Lamkin just tweeted that he just got off the phone with Rumph and Rumph told him he did not accept the Florida offer (The Link ). Not sure how much we should read into the Lampkin tweet, and if the kid heard "has not accepted it" or "hasn't yet accepted it".

It seems he had a 30 minute meeting with Charlie just now. Apparently Rumph has to talk to his family later today.... So, a fluid situation, I guess. I would hate to lose him.

So far nobody is confirming it (including Florida reporters), except Thayer Evans at Sports Illustrated, and we know not to trust anything Thayer Evans says when it comes to Texas.

It is unclear if Charlie managed to put an end to the thing in his 30 minute meeting with Rumph, but he does have to talk to his wife. If the family wants to move again after a year, it could get tough I suppose. Whether we made a counter offer of a salary raise, etc, are unknown at this time....

Don't know if this is absolute confirmation, but The Scoop is reporting that the Associated Press has confirmed both that Terrell Williams is leaving UF, and that Rumph is leaving UT to take the UF position. Here's the link in case you want to read it...about midway down.

There is still no independent confirmation from any source in Austin about this, 12 hours after the SI story broke. The Florida outlets are also only reporting what the Thayer Evans' SI blog said. And I am just not going to buy anything Thayer Evans says that involves UT, till somebody else says it.

I have been waiting for some sign of what footballscoop (not a fully reliable source) mentioned as "Associated Press has confirmed it". I see no AP articles on it either. The latest info still seems to be what 247sports said, that "it is not a done deal" and what Duvonta Lampkin tweeted as "he didn't accept the offer", an hour or so after the SI story broke.

This is the second time that this Rumph to Florida stuff is coming up. If he didn't take it up the last time, a month ago, why is he taking it up now?

I am going to wait till Rumph says something. If he told Lampkin today that he "did not accept the offer" and bolted tomorrow saying "I meant I hadn't accepted it, but now I have", that would be terrible. [EDIT: Sorry, I read the tweet wrongly. It was Charlie who told Lampkin that Rumph didn't accept the offer]

Anyway, I would find it odd that he would even try to act dismissive of it to Lampkin, who and Charles initially sounded shellshocked on twitter, unless he is really not having any thought of leaving. Why lie to the poor kid NOW when he is already upset at this news, if you are even considering it? Delaying telling him accomplishes nothing. Lampkin can't do anything about it anyway. Something doesn't fit. If he did not tell Lampkin that he is leaving, I have to think that he really isn't thinking of leaving. [EDIT: I read the Lampkin tweet wrong. If it was Charlie who told Lampkin that Rumph didn't accept the offer, it could mean that Rumph could still go, and Charlie was only saying what he knew then
    ]

But we wait to see what transpires...

Okay, so AAS also had said at noon yesterday what others said. Rumph may still go, but Thayer Evans is not a reporter I will believe on anything. No way.

News gathering isn't what it used to be around these here parts. I also can't get anything from Chip or Ketch or Hornsports or anyone else. Kind of humorous after the flood of information for all the recruiting days up to NSD.

Here's another example of a coach bailing right after signing day. Not too cool man...

it seems it is official. Florida guys are reporting it.

Both Lampkin and Charles are pissed that they were lied to their face (by Rumph, it appears). It seems Charlie is pissed too, as he was the last to know yesterday that Rumph was leaving.

There is also some news filtering in that Charlie has already made a DL coach offer and is waiting to hear... Not sure.

Lampkin later tweeted - "Ya'll dont worry me & charles gone ball at DKR either way it go! #HookEm "

The signees Rumph recruited may feel betrayed right now, but in the long run they will realize going to Texas was in their best interest.

The school is the school. Accepting a scholarship from The University of Texas is always a good move. Period.

But the mercenary nature of the coaches along with the corruption of the NCAA in general creates these types of situations. I suppose there is no way to prevent a coach from leaving but if our players want to leave because of being misled then they should be allowed to do so without losing a year of eligibility. Rumph is Rumph. What can you do to him? He probably could care less about his rep. That's the way people are these days.

That being said, the players don't do themselves any favors in terms of sympathy when they play their games. Commit. Decommit. Hat dance. They are old enough to know that what they are doing makes it very difficult on the coaches.

It's my opinion that any player who waits until signing day is not a team player like Malik or even Kai and Kyler. By committing earlier it helps recruiting for your school.

Why leave for the same position somewhere else? If it was as DC I would better understand.

    Empire,

I posted this earlier on a different thread. Why make a lateral move to Florida?

    1) It's closer to home

    2) He's worked with Strong one year, but how many with McElwain? 3-4?

    3) Florida administration is much more stable and supportive than ours. Donate money to UF sometime and watch the response you get compared to the cheapass little card you get from Austin. I've been a member of The Florida Foundation for 30 years because of a donation I made to honor a friend's mother who died of cancer at Shands. Is it any wonder that Florida passed us on their way to Tier 1 status, while Powers led us from 43/47 to the 50s?

Chicago Bears DL coach Clint Hurtt (at UL with Charlie, and ESPN Recruiter of the year 2013) and Brick Haley (jobless but getting paid by LSU after the DC change) are the two candidates so far reported to be in play. The one who has already been offered is probably Clint Hurtt. Brick has also been contacted.

These are all great names for a DL coach.... RRrrumph, HuRRRRtt, BRRRRick....

Nobody should tell DuVonta Lampkin anything. The dude announces it immediately on twitter. Looks like Charlie has somebody in mind already -The Link

    @DeeChilllin
Already know coach strong gone hire someone thats can coach and push me! Cant wait to meet him

If it is this quick, it has to be somebody that Charlie knows very well - and that would be Clint Hurtt, but I am not sure how Charlie can get UT to agree to hire that guy, with the NCAA show cause thing and all that.... Maybe it is somebody else. We will see who this is.

While Rumph leaving is troubling, assistants leave. It happens. He has his reasons. Hey, if your wife (for example) is from Florida and she wants to live close to the family, well, what are you going to do? I'm just saying...

The question is, when did he know and what (and how) did he tell the players? We will never know. He may have handled it poorly, or perhaps not.

If I were in that position and a recruit posed the question about my commitment and longevity, I would temper my answer because, candidly, very little is certain in those positions. However, if I unequivocally told recruits that there was no way that I would be leaving (now or soon) and then bolted, well, that's another story. It is very complicated. Like all of us, some folks have more integrity than others.

I hope we can bring in a "strong" replacement that can recruit, and coach, as well as Rumph.

    65,

Nine were drafted, but I believe a total of 23 signed with NFL teams, including that walkon kid from Pfugerville (Jim ???), who stuck as a DL with the Steelers for 3 or 4 years

    Sabre..

The total number of players drafted from the 1983 Longhorns was 21. !7 were taken in the '84 draft and 4 juniors on that team were taken in the '85 draft,

    The Link

The 9 referred to were defensive player. Combined '84 and '85 draft was 11 since Tony Degrate and Jerry gray were in the '85 draft but were starters on the '83 team. I believe that is the all time record from one team and that record will probably never be broken.

The defensive statistics for that '83 team were amazing. I believe that 40% of the opponents offensive plays resulted in no gain or negative yards.

The basic defense they ran most of the time was called "26 trim cover one banjo"

yes, U of Miami had more players selected. Were there more pro teams in that draft than in '84? I believe there were 32 NFL teams as opposed to 28 teams in 1984. Even with that, there were 280 players selected in '84 as opposed to 224 for that year which goes to your point.

The 9 defensive players selected from the '83 Texas is the defensive record. That was my point of the '83 team. Their offense was not near as good as the defense.

Don't know how to do that fancy reply stuff.

In the recent past anyone who chooses Florida over Texas has not done very well. Consider John (I won't let you down Coach) Blantley and Coach Boom.

Sorry if I missed this but was Lamkin referring to Charlie or Rumph when he said he was lied to his face?

Charlie is taking some hits on this in the Dallas paper (probably Aggies) comments section saying his core values are a one-way street.
