I've been saying a long time that we needed a Bevo that could shoot laser beams out of his eyes. It's about time someone finally listened.

I am having trouble with this selection. Why did we not get a grown steer?

Texas Longhorn bulls reach about 50% of their eventual tip-to-tip horn measurement at about one year of age (on average). By four years of age, they reach approximately 95% of their maximum length.
This Bevo is already 19 months old. We are going to wait two years and hope the horns grow out ?
He is a cute fella, but this doesn't seem like a good decision.

spur is a year younger than Was Studley.

Temperament and disposition are key. Clearly they sought a mascot which could serve a long time.

BTW ... Pound for pound ... Bulls have the shortest horn of the genders.

Spur will be a big un.

The Texas Longhorns having a shorthorned bevo is like if the Notre Dame Fighting Irish found a 7 foot tall, pacifist leprechaun. It's wrong. I have to second that this was a really bad mascot decision

How hard is it to find a proper bevo? It's not like this state suffers from a shortage of cows.

Also, we're Texas. We can afford to get older Bevos. We're not hurting on cash and do not need to get one that will "last longer."

    Maybe I wasn't communicating.

The need is for an animal to represent

We just started a true freshman. We don't bar lower class men from varsity play.

Most mature animals aren't going to react well to the intensity of the environment.

Sunrise has the advantage of experience sponsoring the mascot, location, and quality in their livestock.

It's a major commitment to provide the mascot. The Bakers have done an outstanding job and know what it takes to have a good mascot.

Stories of a loose Longhorn running the opposition make for great tales, but are NOT practical nor smart.

    Spur should serve us well.

Sorry, could be wrong on this steer, but usually the horns are turning up before 19 months. This almost looks like a Watusi mix.
Not unsympathetic to the Bakers, but I want a Longhorn mascot. If not them , someone else.
Pretty sure we can afford it.
Not sure I ever remember a Bevo not already being Bevo.
Longhorns running loose probably wont happen again since they are doped up, just like this one will be doped up.
Again, not sure what we were thinking on this mascot.

Definitely NoT Watusi. There are multiple horn types in the breed. Watusi isn't one of em. Spur doesn't have Watusi

I tried to explain the factors ... And "buying Bevo" isn't the arrangement.

You clearly do not recall Studley's (XIV) youth. It's ok, but a young steer who grows into the role is MUCHO better.

I guess if some won't ***** about Charlie Strong, they'll complain about the new young Bevo.

Where are you getting your info from? Longhorn horns grow for life. You can tell his horns are growing rapidly by looking at the amount of discoloration at the base of his horns. He comes from extremely excellent genetic stock, don't worry about his horns they will be big. He is going to be the biggest bodied Bevo yet which I think is great. The last Bevo had great horns but he was smallish through body. I want an imposing specimen down on the field. Don't worry about Bevo XV he will be big.

Not really. The short horned bevo came totally out of left field. Also, there were quite a few people in my section of DKR (including plenty of unconditional strong supporters) disappointed with shorthorns.

What I have learned over the years about the University of Texas is that some fans and alum (but not many) will defend UT in all situations regardless of whether UT is right or wrong sort of like aggy and their traditions. There is no critical thought about whether they like something or not, just if UT does it, it must be fine and defended.

A great example is Bill Powers. Many students and alum would tell you he was a wonderful president, but could not give one reason why other than he simply was wonderful by virtue of being the president of their school.

On another semi related note, a lot of the people what whine about whining on this board always incessantly whined about Mack Brown, Barnes, Augie, etc for years before finding a sudden aversion to whining.

    Htown77,

Also sorta like some Longhorn fans and their tradition of expecting to see a full grown Bevo, and being a bit put out when he isnt?

He's a young steer who will grow along with a young team and young fans. Let's let him, and cheer this new beginning.

    :bevo:

And for the record, I never thought much of Powers.

I like this analogy. It really works since Coach Strong redshirts freshman who are not ready to play yet and need to grow a little.

Mesohorny, for the record, i was not calling you out individually but calling out a lot of general comments in general over the past few weeks and decided to go ahead and to use this thread and your comments springboard into one of my usual rants on semi related topics.

The moral of this thread is obviously the response to the new bevo is mixed.

He did (or at least I think he did) on the Godzillatron in the first video they ever used. To this day it's still my favorite. In fact, if anyone on this board has that video, please post it. It was Longhorns transforming into football warriors as they entered the stadium.

Perhaps. But there are plenty of others who have been very consistent in their criticism, regardless of the coach. And many have also been very complementary of Strong (if that's who you are alluding to), his character and what he has brought to the 40 Acres. For the most part those critics based their assessment on facts and records, and nothing else.

Wouldn't have believed it if you'd told me that there were folks unhappy with our new Baby Bevo. We currently have the best lookin' mascot on the planet and yet....

Them horns are going to be just about perfect when we take the field for the National Championship in 2018.
