Big news out of Boomer country..... http://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/19571249/bob-stoops-steps-coach-oklahoma-sooners
Lincoln Riley to take his place per Dean Blevins. Take that for what it's worth. Bob's probably going to retire and open a puppy shelter.
http://www.koco.com/article/ou-head-coach-bob-stoops-to-retire-sources-confirm/9990437 YOU BEAT ME TO IT! A friend on FB mentioned it five minutes ago. He lives in Lawton and is a huge OU fan. I think it's true.
I'd say all the sideline reporters will not miss his, "Are you freakin' kidding me with that question" style...
Yup, co-worker told me 10 minutes ago - it's all over twitter. Sooners are shocked and freaked out by the suddenness. Guess we will eventually learn if this truly was a health related decision, scandal related, perhaps a desire to go to the NFL, or none of the above.
I really want to be a smart *** and say something vile and mean. But I can't. Respect *EDIT* Mixon slipped my pitiful short term memory. Good riddance Bobbo.
I can. He probably got tired of all the **** he got from the press for giving scholarships to Mixon and the like.
He was a worthy opponent and good for the Big 12. Based on current trends, I wasn't projecting a lot more for him to accomplish besides longevity records. He's about my age. I hope he's healthy and able to enjoy a long and prosperous life that doesn't involve OU continuing to get more Big 12 conference titles at our expense.
Whatever you thought of him, he was a big-time coach and name. The Big 12 is starting on a new era and the young bucks now have the baton. I doubt he is afraid of Herman or whatever but it's highly possible that he saw the energy and hunger and leveled with himself that he wasn't that hungry anymore.
Interestingly it's the same thing a lot of people said Mack should have done. Although doing it in June instead of January is certainly quite odd. I predict his successor will have some trouble. It's not always true but pretty consistently it's very tough to follow a legend. Usually the next guy up falls off a bit and it takes the 2nd or 3rd guy following to build thing back to where they were before.
wow ??? I don't believe Stoops retired " effective immediately" without some sort of controversy, something BIG must be about to break and OU is doing pro-active damage control. NCAA sanctions may be imminent. The above is purely speck-a-lashun, but a perennial Big12 champ coach doesent abruptly retire 2 1/2 months before the season.
Texas and Nebraska fans would give the first born children for consistent success. Both fanbases have realized how easy it is to take success for granted during our recent struggles.
He was a great coach, and a more than worthy opponent. After the 63-14 beat down, which I warned people about before it occurred, Bobby Jack arranged for me to talk to the man. I told him that while I shall never get over the humiliation and embarrassment of losing like that to anyone, much less OU, that as a football fan, the surgical procession with which his coaches and players dissected "my team" was a thing of beauty to behold for any true fan of football. I thanked him for his time, and told him I looked forward to visiting again, but hopefully under far better circumstances. He has always been a quality gentleman in my limited dealings with him, and I wish him and his family the best. That said, my first thought is the possibility of Tom Herman taking over at Texas and Linc Riley taking over at OU the same year could be the new era version of Royal to Texas and Broyles to Arkansas.
AMF, mutha, cheating just lost one of its most fervid disciples. I guess it could get worse - -they could call Barruh back.
Strategically, the timing is great for OU. Plenty of time before the season and the close of recruiting next February. The new head coach is already on staff and has visibility and relationships aplenty.
Yeah, strange timing but maybe it doesn’t mean anything. This had to have been in the works for months though.
I'd guess that there's either a health issue or a personal issue rather than any ncaa issues. It seems odd to wait 5 months after the end of the season unless something unexpected came up.
I noticed in thanking his wife he mentioned how tough it is to be a coaches wife. I can't get my head around that when they are sitting on millions of dollars and were treated like royalty in that town. I guess it's the old, "I can't complain but sometimes I still do."
I know I'm spamming the board; sorry... BUT, you know what's next... Lincoln Riley gets the job. It wasn't posted. There were no outside interviews. Do you know what I am thinking? He's 33 years old.
