Frank Broyles dead at 92

I always liked Coach Broyles, he and Coach Royal showed class. Last night, I was watching the 1977 Texas-Arky game and the clock lost 4 minutes for some unknown reason. Coach Royal ran to the other side of the field, discussed it with Broyles and ran back. At half, Coach Royal said they decided they didn't care and aren't going to worry about it. I can't imagine that happening these days without all kinds of drama.

Broyles and Royal were both head football coach (a 60+ hour/week job) plus athletics director at the same time they were head coaching. IIRC women's athletics was also under that umbrella.

Broyles, in a small state surrounded by athletic programs such as Dayglo UT, UT Austin, OU, LSU, and the Big 10 just north of Arky built piggy athletics into a perennial No.1 ranking overall--- football, men's basketball, baseball, track and field were all in national title contention.

Sad for him, so the story goes, he never watched a replay of The Big Shootout, just too painful. Beautiful scene of him walking off the field that day each hand holding one of his two little daughter's hands, they seemingly oblivious to the magnitude of the defeat and pain Coach was feeling.

Well, Soooooey Pig!!!!! Coach Broyles. RIP.

 

He was an amazing man, class act, and great human being. He has what I consider to be the greatest coaching tree in football history. I had the pleasure of meeting him on several occasions, mostly in Fayetteville and Springdale. I have to believe that Herman's is awash in tears today, but I have visions of Coach Bill Michael greeting Coach Broyles when he arrived in Heaven.

RIP, Coach, and tell Coach Bill & Carolyn "hello" for me.

Ask everyone of them who was the best coach, and everyone of will or would say Jim MacKenzie. When the OU job came open, MacKenzie went to Coach Broyles and asked him to help him get the job. Coach Broyles wold him "yes, as long as you don't ask any of my assistants to go with you". MacKenzie never asked a single one, because they all asked him. I have heard that story from three of those people, and most importantly directly from Coach Broyles and Coach Michael face to face.

 

RIP Coach Broyles. You were one of the greats. Thanks for the memories.

 

Just heard the news this morning. I too watched LHN last night and saw the 1976 UT - Ark game. Previous posts said it very well about what a great coach, a great person and a class act he was.

The night before the 1966 Cotton Bowl, Broyles laughingly said to reporters that "Jim MacKenzie is upstairs putting together the best coaching staff in America on Arkansas' dime".

I was 9 years old when McKenzie came to our house to sign my late brother to his SWC Letter of Intent in February 1965, at our dining room table. Here was the #2 man on America's #1 team and I was hooked on the Hogs. When MacKenzie died in the spring of 1967, the funeral was in Norman and it drew College Football Royalty. Coach Broyles was inconsolable. He was a giant of a man. The anniversary of my brother's death was the 13th. I know he was glad to see Coach when he got there.

Great Coach and a better human being. He was also a pretty decent announcer later in life.
