I've watched UT football for 64 years . . . .

and I've never seen a more lackluster, gutless display of lazy, disinterested, and uninspired football in all that time.

We got outhustled, outcoached, and outplayed. Only the punter was worth allowing on the field. Every other part of this team got physically and mentally overwhelmed.

I've also come to the conclusion that this head coach is not ready to run this program. I doubt we've upgraded over the most recent head coach.

We were totally beaten in every phase of this game.

It will be a travesty if UT is allowed to go to a bowl game.

At least the volleyball and women's basketball teams have enough balls to compete.

I agree with almost everything you say.
The one quibble I have is that there were several very good individual performances and overall the defense played well enough to win the game.

It’s just too bad to see those performances pissed away by some pitiful play calling, and some really sloppy careless play by many other key individuals.

 

I am the first to admit that I knee-jerk and have a short term memory but this is as bad of a home loss as I can remember in several years. Maybe the BYU game a few years ago or the 50+ pt loss to UCLA in the Mackovic era. I feel worse about this game than I did last year loss in Lawrence.

 

I just got home from the game, and I feel the same way. I wish I could raise my hand in the press conference and ask Tom Herman whether he cares, because it seemed like he just didn't care whether we lost.

 

This is difficult and disappointing. I have so much faith in Herman but his faith in certain players and systems was hard to follow all year.

My first UT football game was the 1964 Cotton Bowl vs Navy. I agree, The last few years have been consistently lacking in the teams give-a-damn attitude. Going to be several seasons until for a team to get their minds right.

 

This T or T+1 has sucked MUCH worse. At least we scored some points. Outside of 2015, that's new.

Beyond that, I'm happy you don't remember the rest.

I assume that Herman didn't notice that almost our entire running attack was aimed at the center of Tech's defensive line - it had little to no chance to succeed. We made All-American candidates out of those guys.

I, like many others, wanted to see Tom Herman successful, but looking at his season's work, I doubt we are better off than when Charlie was here. Both recruited well, but that was just about all one could say that was good about what we have seen out of either of them. Herman has won exactly one more game this year than Charlie did last year. Whoop-de-dooo.

I think the AD should be fired on the spot if he allows this team to go to a bowl, and the coach should be treated the same if he argues for a bowl. This team needs to stay home and practice, and get a better attitude.

Why allow them to go somewhere and further embarrass this university? A bowl game should be a reward for doing a good job, not for the likes of Maryland, USC, OU, and Tech.

 

Why do they need to practice? These coaches and players had four weeks in the spring, three weeks in August, and 13 weeks of the season. If they ain't got it right by now, another three weeks is not going to miraculously transform them into contenders. We still don't have a QB that can read a defense, but we do have a group of very talented WRs, they just run the wrong routes, don't look for the hole in the zone, and quit on damn near every play.

 

Two things: 1) Replays show receivers are open early but both our qbs hold the ball too long and can't make quick decisions on where to go with the ball so they end up bailing too soon.
2) How wide open were the TT receivers? Not much. We're all the passes perfect? Nope. I saw some amazing catches tonight. Their 6'6" receiver was able to make plays where ours wasn't. Colin Johnson is good against "air" or when he's wide open and the ball is thrown perfectly but how many 50-50 balls does he catch?

I was disappointed with the effort last night. We had several chances to put the game away but didn't. The season had ups and downs but we must remember this is an early work in process and will take some time to get going. We must be patient. Good times are coming. Hook 'em!

 

BUT...wasn't it young that had a lengthy run stuck in there somewhere that substantially altered the YPC?

I still don't agree with the decision to pass though...even if the numbers said the run game was getting all of 1.5 yards per touch, the 3rd and 2 situation gives two cracks at the first down AND burns clock. I would approve of the going for it on 4th down in that situation...

 

No sir. We have one QB who consistently holds the ball too long. We have one who consistently underthrows receivers, especially on deep go routes. We have one who over the entire season has not protected the ball, especially, in the red zone. And that QB played all but three snaps last night.

We have another QB who is a much better passer, in all respects, than the other. But the other seems to have a free pass for some reason. I suppose because he is a decent runner.

But we don't have a wishbone offense; we don't run the veer. We run some version of a modern passing attack. But our coaches have chosen the running QB to run it.
And we get lousy results from their choice. Why does that surprise anyone?

 

My biggest issue with Herman coming in, in fact my only issue, was his cocky, know-it-all nature. I'll never forget the confrontational interview he had with those Houston journalists while coaching the Cougars. His cocky attitude has not served him well here.

Perhaps interestingly, my primary issue with Ehlinger -- before he played one snap, was his cocky attitude.

Interesting coincidence.

 

He broke one big run, without with his average was 2.5 YPC. Watching the game, it was pretty obvious we couldn't consistently run the ball well, whether it was Young, Carter, Porter, or Ehlinger.

Also, let's not forget, the play call worked as intended - Duvernay burned his man on a drag route right in front of Ehlinger, would have been an easy completion with some decent YAC as well, but Sam inexplicably threw to the covered man instead.

 

Yeah but if you run on 3rd you force Tech to either burn their last timeout or let the clock bleed. If Young hits his average (without big run considered) he gets the first down. If he doesn’t, you bring in your all American punter to force Tech to go at least 75 with zero timeouts or even go for it if it’s 4&1.

While I’m on my soapbox let me go back to Herman’s reminder of the definition of insanity and then apply it to Ehlinger’s decision making late in games...having Sam throw the ball in that scenario is setting him up for failure.

 

I've never seen a team struggle so much in trying to pick up a tough 1-2 yards when it's needed.

I've never seen a QB also make so many bone headed plays

• Sam's throw towards the sideline while almost getting sacked, close to another INT
• 1st and goal at the 1, pulling the ball out of the RB's belly and getting tackled at the 5
• The interception with 2 min to go
• the cross the hashes throw to the sideline, that also was intercepted

There's something just not right with his head. We need Buechele to carry us for a year, while we find a QB this year that can redshirt and then start in 2019.

 

There is something fundamentally wrong with needing one yard and snapping the ball five yards deep. Put someone under center (preferably Heard) and fall forward, EVEN WITH A BAD OL!

Could not agree more. Well that and the losing. But Herman has made me root for “Kurt” Bohls in the pressers for Chrissake.

I know he probably thinks he is fashioning himself after his mentors or Nick Saban etc etc but the difference there is that they have skins on the wall so they can be insufferable ********. Herman’s arrogance smacks of someone trying too hard. Before you do anything or when you are .500 and finding ways to lose games you should probably let your actions do your talking for you.

I actually see Tom Herman as a guy who is kind of an egghead trying to be a hardass football coach who would actually make a much better GM of operations so he can focus on organizational policies and procedures etc etc like pee charts and aromatherapy foot baths in the lockerooms or the placement of the band and the volume of the Jumbotron etc etc

 

Just saw a beautiful jump pass from the wildcat formation in the bama/Auburn game. My first thought was that Heard could do that so easily. Auburn's tight end was wide open. Can't we think of something like that. Why isn't that in our arsenal? As an OC I would be scouring a lot of football games looking for innovative plays that might work in certain situations and not necessarily trick plays.

One of the things I was most pissed off about last night was all the rinky, Mickey Mouse cutesy plays. It was Texas Tech, a team without a quality win all season, and we are drawing up vacant lot plays for national TV. I was seriously waiting for what Coach Posey called "the Johnson Special".

 

Yeah it sure would be nice if we could just run over everybody but we don't have the horses for that. I am with you I wish we could do that.
