Well, unless you count Ramonce Taylor driving around with a kilo of weed in his car in Georgetown, no "gangstas" ever at Texas, although Moore may have gone past the limit with a chambered round in his semi-automatic on 6th street.

You need to follow UM, especially in the '90s.

Talk to VY about it, because he said it leading up to title game with USC. We aren't necessarily talking about REAL gangstas, but guys that play like gangsta.

Not debating the point, just rather shocked the post wasn't at least two complete lines longer due to drama queen-ish overusage of punctuation.

    I recognize two things:

    1) we are not a deep team yet. Beyond our returning starters, we are playing at best HS Senior stars.

    2) we have injuries at least at 5 key positions on defense. We have injuries on offense too, but we are deeper on offense.

We were not winning a national championship this year even without the injuries. We still can still win 9 or 10 games, have another solid class and possibly even win the Big 12 with a rematch with OU. Even if we drop 1 or 2 more games, we have some very young guys getting valuable playing experience.

    Tap the brakes.

I still have yet to see any evidence that this is the case. If that's your claim, go through all the injuries and how each one occurred, and post the results here.

Yes! this is a good point in the injury situation. Younger guys and backups getting game experience. But, I'll temper that with they need to learn and improve from their mistakes to minimize their recurrence. Hard to really tell if that is happening. Right now, for the final run, we need the seasoned veterans to heal up and return soon, especially on D.

I didn’t see Jacoby Jones either. Josh Thompson (out) probably would have helped given the youth in the field. Finally, Jeffrey McCulloch was out too.

there are really only 3 reasons for blitzing ever 3rd and long, and especially blitzing from safeties 10-15 yds off the LOS
    1. backups don't know how to play cover 2 and it was best we could do with what we have
    2. TO is a complete moron
    3. TO is just stubborn as I've ever seen.
Which do you think it is?

Wow, I see a lot of pretty harsh comments up above and I get it. I have to admit I was cursing during the KU game and feeling pretty angry up until we escaped. And yes, I feel others concern for our "defense", and feel that we will lose several more games this year if it is not improved dramatically and quickly.

Having said that, I did want to make some comments on the disarray our defense is in because of injuries.
    1) Continuity loss due to the number of injuries
    2) Backups of backups have little to no experience and you would hope to never have to play one, much less several except when games are put away
    3) KU QB did play out of his mind... I've seen pro QB's with less read and react skills and great passing accuracy. Unfortunately BIG 12 tends to have some very good offenses, so we will be challenged more in the future.
    4) My biggest question about performance and coaching is the DL. Stopping the run and getting some pressure on the QB starts with the DL and they don't seem to give us the foundational strength a solid defense. Starting the season, our biggest question mark was linebacking. I don't see good football coming from that crew either, with out of position play, poor angles and tackling. Hopefully, these guys are coachable and we will see some significant improvement. As much of this issue is mental, we do have the potential for some rapid improvement.

Let's face it, these guys haven't gotten reps together. When you just lose a player or two unless they are very key leaders (e.g. QB), continuity is usually not disrupted. But when you have wholesale losses, I think you can arrive at the place we find ourselves. My biggest hope is that trial by fire is going to cause some of these guys to "jell" on the field and that we will see a dramatic cut down of the most egregious errors and communication problems.

I have to say, I feel a lot of confidence in the offense and yet even the offense has some room for improvement (2 4th down failures + 2 turnovers against Kansas that kept Kansas in the game). The offense needs to minimize pressure on our poor defense to lessen the need for late game heroics.

The Chinese curse "may you live in interesting times" seems to have struck the longhorns as the next game against TCU will be very interesting IMO. Will we get some guys back from injury and will that help stabilize our defense? Will the guys with little or no experience start to learn from their new found reps and cut down some of the worst errors? Will the TCU QB look like another Heisman against the horns or be a little more down to earth than Carter Stanley? Will our coaches figure out some schemes to settle our defense down so there are not so many missed assignments and flat out failures from being out position? Will the front line take the challenge to stop the run and get some pressure on the opposing QB? The DL needs to win their battles and make sure the LB's have free rein to make plays.

OK, I may be biased, but I think we will see just enough improvement on defense to get by TCU. Thankfully TCU offense hasn't been world beaters this year, and I seriously doubt their QB will look as good as Carter Stanley. Sam E will not let us lose, but TCU defensive coaching has a history of being among the best so I believe it will be a significant challenge for our offense. So this is not going to be easy.

YOu do realize Kansas was dead last in the Big 12 in total offense coming into the game. QB looked all world because he was playing pitch and catch. Injuries make us worse and everyone understands that. What we don't understand is running the same impossible to be successful D every 3rd and long. Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

They just did beat BC and frankly I don't care what they were ranked, anyone watching the game could see a QB executing beautifully. The guy made some unreal throws. Still, we had busted coverages which at times made it easy on him, and also their running game was more upsetting than the passing game to me. I would see our LB's make poor decisions consistently on plugging running lanes and players that can't tackle near the side line. As far as defensive schemes, I just don't think we were running anything correctly and were lost on the field. I think the new plays we were facing were too much our beat up inexperienced out of sync and miscommunicating defense.

I think we have to remember we didn't start out as a great defense. We had poor defense playing LSU and poor defense facing OU. Injuries have degraded what defense we had. We should have been improving on defense as people got experience and learned to play with each other, but the opposite has occurred with injuries and loss of continuity.

I do think the TCU game will tell us which way we are headed. I think the combination of getting some guys back, getting more reps for the inexperienced, and the coaches adapting to our defensive reality will start us back on the road to at least a mediocre defense. With a mediocre defense, I think we can beat most teams, because our offense is good and hard to stop.

Injuries are going to happen, just look at our RBs. We've had an unusual amount of injuries which is going to affect our performance. That being said, I've never liked the 3-4 and not getting to the qb will get the dbs scorched. There were some poor late forming blitzes in the 4th qtr that aren't going to work. Kansas is much improved and played the game of their lives, while our defense didn't.

Why should this convince me that these injuries happened during tackles with poor technique and that said technique directly caused the injuries?

I do not believe some of you realize just how deep into the bench we are at times on defense.
On KUs last touchdown drive we had a walk-on (Mason Ramirez) who had played 0 snaps and a true freshman (Chris Adimora) who had played two drives previously on the field.

Why is that? That is why I started this. Why is it that Texas seems so susceptible to injury? Wasn't that a knock on Herman at Houston? Didn't they have a lot of injuries as well?

Mack Brown was criticized for lack of physical teams. Is Texas too physical during the week now and that makes them more susceptible to injury?

I get what you are saying...and agree with your points. It isnt an either/or argument to me.
Whatever the reason, the fact is we are waaay less than even average strength and that fact cannot be dismissed when evaluating the team...nor can your argument.

Jones, Overshown and Foster should play, but have lingering injuries. Green is practicing TBD tomorrow if he can handle contact. Sterns and Whittington out but possible in 2 weeks.

Herman's comments today about Foster and Overshown do not sound good. May miss game vs TCU from what I hear from his statements. This is really sad.

Here's what "ourlads.com" currently shows as our 2 deep at DB:

    CB Boyce, Jamison, Donovan Duvernay
    S Overshown, Estell
    S Brandon Jones, Estell
    CB Cook, Jamison, Watson
    NB Brandon Jones, Foster

Obviously, Brandon Jones can't clone himself, so that leaves Foster as a 1 deep NB. Maybe we look for Estell to go to NB, or Overshown to go to NB with Estell starting at the S position. Other possibilities are Brandon Jones plays NB and Estell starts at S (probably the most likely scenario). Watson, 6'1" 190, might have to cross train at NB too. Strangely enough, we find ourselves relatively deep at CB and dying at S and NB. One of the other CBs may have to fill in for an injured S or NB as well. Marques Caldwell (destined for a redshirt this year) may have to get ready and play a few games in an emergency, while still preserving his redshirt.

Foster's shoulder/arm/upper body injury appears to be significantly affecting his tackling. I'd rather he sit until fully healed if at all possible. He strikes me as one of these real tough guys who will play injured and possibly not let on about how hurt he really is.
