    Well from BON:

Texas LB Juwan Mitchell enters the NCAA transfer portal

"There were concerns about Mitchell’s future, however, when he was the only player to leave the field before the Eyes of Texas following the win over Texas Tech to finish the regular season."

In my book, when you do not respect the institution that gave you a sterling chance at improving your life, good riddance.

So once he realizes he will be riding the bench for a year at a new school, will he withdraw and give Hutzler a chance? Will his academics allow that?

With Adeoye down to a foot injury (who knows when he'll be full speed again), and now this, the LB room is starting to look a bit on the thin side.

Taking out the injured Adoeye and the new portal loss (probably) of Mitchell, as of right now, that leaves us the following LB room for Spring:

    Scholarship LBs:
    13 Marcus Tillman, Jr.
    33 David Gbenda
46 Joseph Ossai --may play rush DE or a hybrid LB/DE role in new D.
    50 Byron Vaughns

    Walk-on or former walk-on LBs:
    35 Russell Hine
    52 Jett Bush
57 Cort Jaquess (earned a scholarship - good enough to start)
    47 Luke Brockermeyer
    48 Jake Ehlinger

We need a healthy Adoeye back, Gbenda, Tillman, and Vaughns to speed up their development, and Dorbah to show up ready to play. Jaquess is the pleasant surprise out of this group. He's gone from walk-on to a probable significant contributor or starter. I've also read that Hine is pretty decent. Overshown, or even BJF may be learning some LB skills in the near future.

Any MLBs from other schools in the portal we can go get to beef up depth ?
That won't help the issue for Spring Drills though. Hate to see moving guys from other positions to fill the void, as they need all the work they can get at the positions they are at now. Screws up their development, which is way behind the curve anyway; thanks to the poor coaching Herman admitted existed the last few years.

I can't explain why but he doesn't have speed, strength, or skill to play in Big 12. He killed us last year. I wish him luck but I won't miss seeing him out of position on every play next year.

Man, really hate to see this.
He looked real good to my eyes.
Not sure how the Tech post-game played into the Alamo Bowl move, but Cort Jaquess hetting that start certainly is linked somehow it seems.
Hate to see him go. ..tons of upside

7th leading tackler. He seemed to cover well and he loved to blow up running plays or get to the QB.

    Form BON (above):
"There were concerns about Mitchell’s future, however, when he was the only player to leave the field before the Eyes of Texas following the win over Texas Tech..."

    From 247 Sports:
"Cort Jaquess earned his first career start over Mitchell in the Alamo Bowl, which marked the 22nd game in which he's been on the field for the Longhorns."

The guys sounds like he's a problem child. Did he play against Tech? Did TH bench him for the bowl game because he walked off the field after the Tech game without joining his team to sing "The Eyes"? Looks like he had plenty of playing time, and did a descent job. But his actions are akin to those of a little kid that doesn't get his way. On the other hand, it could be a grades issue. All I can say is, "well...bye".

All I know is he seemed like a disruptive player, something we've been needing more of.

Yes; but what type of disrupter? On the field - ok. In the locker room - not so much.

He was injured the last two regular games of the season .... so no action in the Tech game. Came into the second half of the Alamo Bowl for better pass defense. Jacquess started the first half to stop the run, I believe.

He just left before the season (I believe) as he was not getting the role playing minutes he thought he deserved. Went to UCLA, I think. Great move for such an over talented guy.

unless there was pain/injury, it's hard to get around agreeing with this. i don't know what's going on, but the whole team knows the significance of the post-game Eyes :hookem:

No big loss IMO. We are talking about a position that for the most part will be a 2 man set in most of our formations. We have lots of guys that can step up. I'm pretty sure Ossai is going to take on a Brian Orakpo role on the dline next year which means we will need some younger guys to step up. I think we will see either BJ Foster or DeMarvion Overshown take on a true linebacker role next year.

Really looking forward to seeing DeMarvion next year. And your take on Foster is very interesting..
Doubt we will see it, but I think I can visualize that working...add about 12-15 lbs and he'd be a beast behind the line.

I could see it, depending on what the new DC implements. BJ Foster's strengths have always been bone-jarring hard hitting, getting to the ball carrier, and tackling (other than when he was playing injured). He's pretty so-so at coverage for a safety. He could, and may or may not, spin down to OLB. Same with Overshown. That being said, it would be nice to have at least one vicious headhunter in the secondary if we're playing 5 DBs.

Okay, okay, sometimes it seems like I'm still living before the targeting rule...

Overshown was mostly seen as a tweener when he was recruited. He seems to like to play closer to the LoS than other DBs.

He is a Soph., and would have most likely seen more PT this past season and next year if he had stayed. But he's impatient, if he wanted to put his cleats on the field and play more as a frosh, perhaps he should have practiced harder.

I'm starting to enjoy it (too much) every time someone mentions that a player "portaled himself"......maybe it'll become like "gruntled" and "allsome"

Ha! And maybe Scotty can beam him back from the other side of the portal or something...

I suppose athletes will ingress and egress through the portal or just “portal” (our new verb) themselves. It’s similar to how the leisure class uses “Summer” as a verb. Example—We Summered at Martha’s Vineyard, while Mitchell just portaled himself.

Jeff Beezos will portal you to the moon with his new Blue Origin rocket facility near Van Horn. I know some Aggies who would like it up there!

We have been thin at LB for a few years now. Has that hurt us? With the pass happy offenses we face regularly, what role do linebackers play? If we can achieve dominant line play, and have good cover corners and hard hitting safeties, what would be the need for "linebackers". Is there a place for a Tommy Nobis, or Dick Butkus in today's game?

Someone should start an All Portal team. How about a top 100 portal team. Who is the #1 portal guy this year?

To win the Big 12 you don't need big LBs, but....As long as Bama and others have big backs and mobile OL, you have to have a few big LBs on the roster, or they will pound you with a power run game. Well...that is if you ever hope to win a Natty.

There are about a dozen ILBs in the portal who can immediately play. Not sure any would be any better than the walk-ons we have now. It would at least keep from derailing the development of SS we would have to spin to create depth.
