Can anyone please tell me how much capacity will the renovated stadium have after construction is completed? I thought it was supposed to be over 110K, but I can't find anything definitive about that.

No, it was only marginally more than what it was before due to losing seats from Sections 1 and 32. Those loge box seating areas don't have a ton of "seats" in them, and there are rules about how many you can count for SRO (butts per sq. ft.). I said earlier in the thread that I wouldn't be surprised if we counted like 102750 because Kyle is officially at 102733.

They can't do the official "count" until they know how much of the standing areas they can use as SRO. It'll definitely go up from 100,119, but I don't think by a whole lot. They will also still use the magic formula to show above 100% capacity for games, too.

LOOKS REAL NICE ... and it looks by my untrained eye that the project is far enough along was we sit here in mid-March that the renovation should easily be done by kickoff Sept. 5th or whatever the date is.

Thanks Horns11 and Worster Man. As long as the reno is done by kickoff and that they don't minimize the seats (smaller butt space) like the aggys did,
    I'm happy.

Worster, I noticed this morning that the big crane on the west side is gone. That would indicate all of the heavy lifts have been completed and elevators are able to handle the placement of materials.

The crane was moved temporarily to El Patio's parking lot to lift me out of my chair after I'm through pigging out.

Interesting picture this morning. Note what the facade will be (right side suites as you are looking at the picture):

It dawned on me the semi-enclosure of the South end of the stadium will aid or help keep the noise in the stadium better than than the just temp bleachers and Godzillatron did.

    Worster,

What worries me is any changes it makes in the kicking game. George R Brown only designed and built one stadium, and it is the best (not most comfortable) ever built. When it was designed, FGs were not 50-60 yards. The upper deck at Rice is such that winds can whip around the upper deck near the goal line and push the ball left or right. Will the new construction impact our kicking game?

Sabre, that is a great point.

I doubt anyone in the planning stage did any kind of research or analyzed the south end zone modification model in a wind tunnel. Having done so, they might have discovered that various wind directions or speeds would / could impact the game - kicking game specifically.

Well, we may find out as early as 81 days if winds of any significance during the game with the Ragin' Cajuns will present challanges.

I just want the kickers out there testing it as soon as possible - like starting in two weeks.

It would be uphauling for a university to devote research time to such an endeavor.

For those in the know, what the wind conditions historically at DKR?

With the open ends on both sides of the structure, the south wind will swirl and the north wind will swoop over the north end structure dip around midfield, bounce up against the structure and come back as a south wind.

Hate to say this about what undoubtedly are talented architects, but WHAT THE F**K WERE THEY THINKING".

As anyone who ever sat in the stadium, 90% of the time from the SE. 9% of the time it is NW when fronts move in. The remaining 1% is when it flips back and forth.

I vividly remember part of the 9% came against Missouri, when they tried to empty the stadium because of severe weather. So the University Police ordered everyone to their cars, which meant some 50,000+ out on San Jacinto dodging lightning bolts and braving 40-50 mph winds. I refused to leave with my kids, and told the police to arrest me, BUT they had to pull their police car into Deloss' parking place, load us up and take us to APD on 7th. I invited the cops to look down on San Jacinto from the 7th floor at the weather and crowd. I told them we were in a concrete box with 3-4 foot thick concrete walls that was rebarb re-enforced. Which was safer? the street or the box. We then set down on the floor and waited it out.

Wasn't a problem getting out of the San Jacinto Garage that night.

I was at the game as a student. We waited under the old east side during the storm. While waiting, we heard about the students running on the field. Once the game re-started, let’s just say it was the best spring break wet t-shirt contest.

Looking at it again, it is off center and maybe like a staged attempt for a photo op or something. Like it was a big vinyl sticker. Today, there's no remnant of it. Maybe complaints?

I noticed the same thing when I saw it. It was way too high and not centered. It very well may have been a setup to gauge reaction. And this morning I checked and it's gone. Yeah... I sure hope they decided against it. We will see.

I think everyone needs to relax. These are stencils they are using to paint logos, numbers, letters, etc. on the field. I doubt seriously they are putting them out there as a trial waiting to see what a bunch of webcam viewers think before making their decisions.
