    HIC,

Give them credit; they took the scraps, charred them, and made people think it is gourmet .

    KC BBQ Report.

Decided to do this report instead of my TPS Report.

Monday night, Mrs. UTAHORN and I went to Gates BBQ on Brooklyn Ave. in KC, MO.

We had the Mixed Plate - Beef, Ribs, Ham and Fries.

Review - It was good and the staff friendly and knowledgeable. In order, I preferred the ham, ribs and beef. While I prefer my meats to be cut a little thicker, this was not bad. The ham was tender, juicy, and drenched in sauce. The ribs were smoky and tender but not Luling City Market level. The beef was thin without the red edge ring I expect. My wife pointed out that it tasted like pot roast. She was right.

Summation - I'd go back, but it would not be my first choice. If you do go, go early as the locals love this place. Lots of takeout orders.

NOTE: KC seems to LOVE sauce and Fries with their Que. Sides are available but at additional cost. Sometimes $5 - $7 more per side. See the review below.

Tuesday night, Mrs. UTAHORN and I went to Jack Stack BBQ on Wyandotte St. also in KC, MO.

We had the Pick Three Kansas City combo. We chose Beef Burnt Ends (Thank you mchammer for that recommendation), Pulled Pork, Baby Back Ribs and Fries. I also noticed something on the menu and got that to go - Beef Burnt End Stew. More on that later.

Review - It was very good, and our waiter was friendly and helpful. Yes, waiter. This is more of a high-end joint than most and initially I was leery, but Jack Stack came highly recommended.

    In order of preference:
The Burnt Ends were amazing. At some joints, they can be a little dry hence the name. However, these were generous cuts that were tender and flavorful.
The four ribs were very tender without drowning in sauce.
The pulled pork was also very good but nothing better than I have had in NC or TX.

The Beef Burnt End Stew is made with Potatoes, Carrots, Smoked Tomatoes, topped with Green Onion and, of course, Beef Burnt Ends all in a thick stew sauce. Comes with white bread, but I would prefer crusty bread with this dish. Would be great on a cold day.

Summation - I would come back here anytime.

    Final Thoughts:
The fries at both places were thick cut, not steak fry cut but good sized. They were well done and crispy without being over cooked.

I did not try the sausage at either place. Should I find myself in KC again, that will be on my list.

I read an article that KC calls itself the BBQ Capital of the World due to the number of restaurants. With all due respect, having a lot of restaurants does not make you the Capital, it just means you have a lot of people who like BBQ.

I'm not slamming KC; the BBQ is good but different. Lots of sauce and pepper.

While my sample size is too small to make an objective decision, I will take Lockhart, the BBQ Capital of Texas over the self-proclaimed BBQ Capital of the World.

    Faithfully Submitted,

Being from Lockhart and from Texas, I just need to note that since Lockhart is officially designated as the BBQ capital of Texas, it is by default also the BBQ capital of the world, no matter what people from other insignificant places might claim.
