...don't be mad at me, Texas. On a Utube video of AP speaking to an OU audience he says "Don't be mad at me" for choosing OU, be mad at Mack Brown. He said he was "all about Texas" until he asked Mack 1 question...the same question he asked Stoops & Saban, "Will I have a chance to compete?" Mack told him Cedric Benson was coming back for his Sr year and, out of loyalty to Cedric, there would be no competition for the job in 2004. However, after 2004, AP could definitely compete for the starting job. So he chose OU without saying anything to Mack.

    A few points here:
    1. I'm glad that Mack was loyal to Cedric.
    2. I'm happy that Mack was honest with young Peterson.
    3. AP's record vs Texas was 1-2.
    4. AP sat at home in January, 2006 & watched Texas win a MNC on television against the same team (So. Cal.) that beat you & OU 55-19 the previous year.
    5. AP never won a MNC.
    6. I personally don't know ANYBODY who is angry at AP for choosing OU.
    7. Personally, I'm happy that the father of multiple children by different mothers who was infamously under the thumb of Child Protective Services and the Texas penal court system for mercilessly beating his young boy with a switch never attended UT.

No, AP, I don't know anybody from UT who's mad at you for going to OU. We did fine without you and shook the dust from our feet a long time ago.

What is the point of loyalty in a competitive sport?
    Are we competing or not?
    Apparently not, which is dumb
Everyone should earn their position every year

Have to agree here. I appreciate Mack as a great coach at UT but his glad handing ultimately caused his demise. As we have seen the last few years, rb splitting carries does not harm their draft status and should prolong their career. It would have been awesome to have AP but we got the trophy without him. As for his off field issues and character, doubtful those things are ever addressed at trailer park u.

I don't know...when Quinn announced he was coming back I didn't see or perceive any real competition for QB. It may have been there, but if so it didn't last very long. I don't hear any complaints about the lack of competition for QB next yr. In 2004, the SOP was to have 1 primary back carry the load. I didn't have a problem then & still don't with a 2 (or 3) back system, but that's not how it was done by most programs 2 decades ago.
Mack showing loyalty is just Mack. I try to let the HC be the HC without my bitching about him. (I TRY...but not always successful).

Did you mean a "UT audience"? Why would any OU fans be mad at him for choosing OU?

So we didn't trot AD out there to spell the Doak Walker winner (despite the obvious that Peterson demolished him in the Heisman vote), and arguably wouldn't have gotten Jamaal Charles to sign the following year. Meh, I'm good.

The bigger issue with Mack Brown was promising Malcolm Brown and Johnathan Gray that we were switching to an Alabama-style offense right when the whole world was losing interest in running backs.

AD who? If they aren't playing for Texas, I don't care. These folks end up making the news even though there's no news to speak of.

If Peterson came to UT, we win the one more championship, because his outplaying of Benson in our 12-0 loss caused our only loss of 2003. Maybe we don’t like him or his parenting, but he was better than Cedric in HS, college and pro, and it wasn’t close (HS was the closest—before Ced hurt his neck against Colorado on an interception return). Peterson is more on par with Earl Campbell and Ricky Williams. But even Earl played behind Leaks for a bit. So, at the least, it is interesting.

"No, AP, I don't know anybody from UT who's mad at you for going to OU. "

I remember his commitment announcement. There certainly was backlash & bitterness on social media for his commitment to the Sooners.

I'm not saying there was no angst & gnashing of teeth at the time, but finish the quote & you have your answer.

Remember, Peterson didn't even start at OU right away. It took him several games to take over the spot from Kejuan Jones. So basically Stoops and Brown both decided he wasn't going to be #1 right away and would have to earn it.

Not sure about that. The difference in running room was tremendous, especially since we were in a "pick your poison" situation and Greg Robinson sensible chose to try and shut down Jason White at all costs - you have to make someone try and beat you, so better the freshman than the senior returning Heisman winner. And you know what, it worked as well as anything could have. White had his worst game of the season with 113 passing yards and 3 turnovers, and Oklahoma had 12 points despite our defense being on the field all game as our offense basically just fumbled or went 3 and out all day.

And yeah, Benson was responsible one of those fumbles, but Peterson actually fumbled twice - unfortunately for us, all 3 of those fumbles were recovered by Sooners.
