Update includes: - Decrease in call set-up failures and dropped calls - Significantly better battery life for most users - Dramatically reduced time to backup to iTunes - Improved email reliability, notably fetching email from POP and Exchange accounts - Faster installation of 3rd party applications - Fixed bugs causing hangs and crashes for users with lots of third party applications - Improved performance in text messaging - Faster loading and searching of contacts - Improved accuracy of the 3G signal strength display - Repeat alert up to two additional times for incoming text messages - Option to wipe data after ten failed passcode attempts - Genius playlist creation Haven't tried the Genius playlist, little wary of sending all that information to Apple.
I haven't noticed significantly or even marginally better battery life....I actually think that my battery life is worse than before the update.
Well... it does say for MOST users the battery life will be better. Guess you guys fall in the "other" category. But I haven't noticed a difference in mine just updated it today
My battery life is much better but I think it's due to being on a WiFi network all day. Evidently it shuts down the edge and 3g chips while it's on a wireless network to save energy.
It made it all a lot better for me... faster, no freazing and rebooting... also the syncing is only a fraction of what it was... great update.
If that's the case, you may just want to put it into Airplane Mode while there. I know, that sucks...but it will save your battery when you don't have any coverage.
I have the older iPhone and after the update I noticed an "E"in the upper left corner which would indicate the Edge network to me. Can that happen with the update? If not what does that mean?
They changed the logo for the Edge network in 2.1. It used to be a white E in a blue box, now it's a blue E. I believe the data network and voice network operate independently, which is why you can theoretically disable the data and still receive voice calls. I'm not sure how text messages are sent, though.
I dont know maybe im wording it wrong or maybe just not understanding sorry. I thought the edge was new for the Iphone 3g...which I DONT have... i have the old one. I did not have an "E" before the 2.1 but now i do
EDGE and 3G are AT&T's two different data networks. The original phone supports only EDGE. The new phone (which you don't have) supports both. If you didn't see the E prior to the 2.1 upgrade, it may be the case that you didn't notice it, had the data network disabled, or weren't connecting to it for some reason. The "E" has been displayed on my version 1 phone since the beginning.
i'm still having actual phone issues. this is by far one of the coolest things i've owned, but it's a terrible phone. hit or miss when a call comes in if i'll get it or not. some ppl with battery issues, could it be the phone is searching for a network? i'm in my house all day and my phone connects to my network. but when i'm out and about it, it seems to drain faster b/c it's searching all the time. just a thought.
I'm surprised to hear the complaints about the phone. Mine is far and away better than my prior phone --- the iPhone easily passes the "elevator to the parking garage" test while my old phone was useless then. I do have the last pre-3G version. Maybe that's an explanation.
I turn 3G and wireless off when I know I'm not in a 3G area or near a wireless network I trust. Before 2.1 with normal phone usage (a few phone calls, a little browsing, some texting, e-mail and calendar push) I had to recharge every night. With heavy usage, sometimes 2x per day. Now I charge 1x with heavy usage and sometime between every 36-48 hours with normal usage.
I did my software upgrade and lost a ton of contacts and calendar events. They are slooooowly updating through the exchange server, but taking forever. Anyone else have this problem?
