I had retired from the U. S. Navy two years previous, going to a Jr College in Beeville for the GI benefits (and to become smarter. It didn't work).

Jr. at UT trying to figure out what major to try next, went to the OU game with a group that included a girl I wanted to grope, she sort of disappeared from the group since she was from Dallas, the game and soggy state fair were buzz kills.

I had just moved to Plano from New Jersey. I did not know what a mall was at all. It was like every time we went out to eat, it was the best thing in the world. I guess food in New Jersey was pretty bad.

I was in 5th grade at Christie Elementary. We had gotten a mocrowave, and I learned that these things called tortillas could be put in the microwave with sprinkle chees and it was pretty damn good. I also learned not to put a paperclip on your popcorn bag.

I was a freshman at UT. I didn't make it to the Cotton Bowl for the OU game that year and stayed in Austin watching the game in my dorm room. Never thought we'd have to wait 24 years to get a non-BCS #1 ranking during the regular season.

Sitting in the Cotton Bowl getting soaked, and listening to a bunch of whiny Okies complain about a possible interception afterwards, when a little earlier their punter went to on knee catching the snap, got up and booted a long punt. They don't like to mention that play.

I turned 13 the day after the ou game that year...woulda been there if I hadn't some kind of stomach virus the night before, so my little sister got to go...the game made only magnified the misery of being sick.

That was a really weird year, Texas football was excruciating to watch by the end of the year, went to my first dance, got an offer to go to Duke after blowing the SAT out in a G/T pilot program and yet almost failed out of Middle school b/c I found girls...and "other interests"...hard to believe it's been 24 years...

I was in 4th grade and enjoyed rooting for the Aggies at our annual Thanksgiving gathering. Decided I wanted to attend college and major in Accounting. I learned UT had the best business school in our State and a&m was out of the picture. Attended summer orientation, fell in love with UT/Austin and joined the Longhorn Band in 1998! Enjoy returning home for Thanksgiving and rooting for my Longhorns!

Not even a gleam in my parents eyes.

Next saturday will be the very first time I'll get to see the horns take the field as the number 1 team in the nation (not counting that one week in 2005, of course).

    I am so pumped.

I was attending my first UT-OU game/flood in person. We barely were able to drive the car out of the mud post-game, & I have yet to attend a game with as much rain as that game(Missouri game in Austin 4 years ago was a close 2nd).
My favorite UT-OU game in person was 2005, but I foolishly passed on attending the game saturday, which I'm sure was better than the 2005 game(My son & a friend of his represented me saturday),so at least he was at "The Classic".

Texas jumped USC to #1 for one week in 2005, USC took it back the next week and never gave it up till Vince killed them.

I recall that I was watching Texas beat someone--can't remember who-- and the current #1 team had just lost. The announcer said, "This means we're looking at the #1 team right now."

When Texas and OU played to the 15-15 tie, Texas dropped to #2 and OU took the top spot. Game was in the rain and there was a controversial call in the end zone that went in Texas' favor. I believe the voters credited that in OU's favor when casting their votes.

I was there with my wife. We had great tickets but it rained the entire game. Stopped as soon as it was over. I remember Switzer being so pissed after the game. We were damn lucky to tie the game and the program went downhill after that. My first child was born the next year, so not all was bad.

I was a freshman offensive lineman from just north of the Red River. I was redshirting that season, so I was not usually on the travel squad. Several other redshirt frosh lived relatively nearby, so they would drive home when we had away games. So I was pretty much alone in the football wing of Jester. I watched Terry Orr and company roll Penn State and couldn't believe that Syracuse upset Nebraska that day, giving us the #1 spot. Next up was Rice, so at least we held the spot for one week.

I did get to suit up for the OU game, probably because I was from there. I remember weird things, like:

    1. Looking forward to Friday pre-game walkthrough, when OT Greg Wright did his famous (at least among the team) impersonation of Keith Jackson and Frank Broyles for the broadcasting duo in person...and they liked it!

    2. I think I was more fired up that day than anyone else on the team (not that they were listless or anything, I was just super amped) even though I knew I wouldn't play a down.

    3. I really thought the unbalanced line that had been installed earlier in the year would have been enough to punch in that ball after the long Kevin Nelson run. Damn I was disappointed.

    4. I remember how many players in the locker room that were absolutely pissed off about the tie. In particular, Al Pawelek was kicking over chairs and shouting about how it was like "kissing your sister." I was relieved we escaped a loss, given the Stanberry interception call.

It's almost too painful to recall the rest of the season, but I'll summarize it by saying I was still hopeful to get the MNC despite the near misses to Arkie, SMU, and TTech. But the wheels came off at the UH game. The Baylor, a$m, and Iowa games were brutal to endure also. At least we spanked TCUnbeleevable that year that they really thought they were great (Wacker Backers and all -- I know, his son was great and a lot of guys on the team liked Coach Wacker too, but that was a satisfying win).

Oh, and BTW, I don't think Edwin Simmons was as tall as Steve Eargle or Bryan Chester. But he was the tallest RB I'd ever seen. Built like a racehorse too.

    Rabid Longhorn.

They were no. 1 for one week in '05 in the BCS poll. Never in AP or Coach poll 'till the last one. USC and Texas held one and two spots in those from beginning of season 'till the MNC.

I was 27 and had been working at the Temple Daily Telegram for a little more than a year. I had recently become engaged to Shadowdancer, whom I would marry in August the following year.

Funny, I never thought it would last.

The No. 1 ranking, that is. Something just didn't feel right about it that year.

    I'm with Shadowdancer for life.
