Getting my wife and myself new handhelds next month. Torn between the Iphone 3G and the Blackberry Curve 8900.

Thoughts, recommendations from my fellow 'horns on which is better and why?

Completely different animals there. Depends on what you use it for.

The IPhone is a great little device. Perfect for staying connected via the web, social networking, and multimedia stuff. The app store is pretty cool too.

The BB is a text/email powerhouse, geared towards business minded users.

Just boils down to what you want to do with it.

I personally would go with the BB, but I love physical keyboards and am not so big on web surfing on my phone.

I just made the switch from the Blackberry Curve to the iPhone last week.

As stated above, it depends on what you want the phone for. If you plan on doing a lot of texting/emailing from your phone, then go with the BB.

If you want great web surfing, lots of cool functions, and a music player all in one, then go with the iPhone. I use the phone function of my iPhone the least. It is just a great device and the app store makes it so much more useful.

A couple of downsides to the iphone vs BB. The battery life is the biggest. I spend so much time on the net, and using the apps and such, that my battery life is about 8 hours on a full charge.

There is no MMS on the iPhone. If someone sends you a picture or whatnot, you are redirected to a website to get it. I have been unable to log into that web site either with the direct link the iphone provides you with, or with an app that was supposed to help.

    Otherwise, imo, iphone>>>BB

I spent a month or so debating between the 8900, Bold and iPhone and picked the 8900. I agree with the consensus above--if the primary use is email/sms then pick the BB and if it is internet/apps then go with the iphone. I have an ipod touch so that fulfills some of what the iphone does so that factored into my decision as well--when I travel and want to watch movies I have the touch for that.

I picked the 8900 over the Bold b/c it is smaller but I think they are pretty comparable. The lack of 3G sucks but the size was more important to me than 3G--I could regret that a year from now, though.

    Re: Iphone.

I find that the battery life (12 hours for me) is fine but what makes it more than OK is how quickly it charges. I can plug it in for 15 minutes and almost get full charge back from almost empty.

I will say that I am getting much better at using the iPhone keyboard. It is so intuitive that you can completely misspell a word, and it will correct it for you when you hit the space bar. I know the BB does that as well, but it is not nearly as intuitive as the iPhone.

Oh, and it is true that the iPhone charges VERY quickly.

I've got an iPod Touch (2nd Gen) and absolutely love it.

However, I was at a meeting at a language institute and another guy showed how he uses his Blackberry phone to play recorded sequences when he's teaching in a small class. (One on ones or up to 6 students around a table.) I don't know how strong the iPhone's speaker is, but the Touch has a very weak speaker.

So if you're looking to ever use the speaker phone option, you might want to look into that.

i've had my iphone since august and have been content with it. one problem i had was dropped calls. well i just found out today, i had an old sim card. i got that replaced and they claim it should fix call problems. we'll see. the only thing i don't like is the MMS. ppl send me pics all the time and i can't get them. you can email pics to ppl's phone number, but that's a pain in the ***.

i'm also pissed that i can't tether my phone with my computer for internet. there are ways to do it, i just haven't experimented
