You don’t realize how stupid you look in the parking lot at work in the mornings. Here you are backing up into your parking space, then having to pull forward to straighten out, then backing up, having to pull forward again to straighten out. Just to finally get into your spot and 65% of the time you are two inches from the yellow line or you are completely over the yellow line. But, you are cool. You get to make a “fast getaway” at the end of the day.

    D-bags.

I once watched a guy back his f-150 into his normal sized garage. It took him five minutes, just so he could feel like knight rider when he pulled out in the morning.

I prefer to parallel (or would it be perpendicular?) park rather than back in.

I just don't understand the whole "backing in" thing.

The gym where I teach aerobics has a very small, cramped parking lot. And inevitably I see these guyg with their honking big pickup trucks delay everyone else in the parking lot because they have to back in.

Must be a guy thing ...

when I was 16, I thought I would be cool and back into the garage one day. When I got the car stuck against the wall of the garage, I thought my dad was going to kill me. Caused some damage to the car and garage. I learned that day that it wasn't cool, and that I was really a bad driver.

I have rode w/ a couple of buddies who have large/long trucks and sometimes they miss a spot and are on the far side of the lane and it is easier for them to back in then to back up and pull forward. However, thats not what I'm talking about here.

I'm not a big backer-upper, but it seems pretty obvious if you have a bigger truck that it's easier to steer sharp angles going backward than forward due to back end steering. Ever seen a forklift?

Sure some people suck at this, but these same morons would probably suck at pulling in forwards too. And then when they backed out to leave, they'd probably be a dangers to other cars and people, so maybe you should thank them for showing their ****** driving skills in a more open and safe way.

We have 20+ employees at work and more than half of 'em back into their spots. I don't get it at all. Our lot is tiny too.

I park in a garage with small spaces. I drive a honda civic, and when parking against a wall or spaces are tight, I will always back in. Having my passenger side to a wall, or another car's passenger side, allows for more clearance for the driver's side door. There is sometimes, in certain circumstances, benefits to backing in beyond just looking like Knight Rider.

In our company, worldwide, back in parking is encouraged, when its safe to do so.

This is based on broad research that shows backing out accidents to be very high in the list of root causes. People tend to pay much more attention as they back in , than when they back out.

Or maybe, with your colleages, it is a knight rider or cool guy and gal thing. I understand that and am not always up to backing in, myself. But, from a safety standpoint, its the right thing to do.

Sadly, I was once (long time ago) one of those that would always backup in parking spacing. My supervisor finally told me one day, "I know you're proud of your car, but please start parking like everyone else".

    Boy, was I a dork.

In my office people do it for the quick getaway. Then they walk at a snail's pace and wait 5 minutes for the elevator to go up 1 flight.

I have no problem if you do when no one is around and you are not slowing down someone else.

Also put your damn blinker on so that I am not right behind when you decide to back in

If you have a small car - what is the point?

You are f***ing kidding, right? Are you really that easily annoyed that people backing into a parking spot bothers you?

I always back in. From my first $300 peice of **** pick up truck to my now $53k Caddy. But not because I think I am all that and more or that I think I am cool or the car is cool or nothing related. It quite simply has to do with my depth perception and that I find it much easier to back into a spot and pull forward out of it than the other way around. Especially in cramped conditions or if it is a spot with cars already on either side. So before you go rolling your eyes and judging the attitude of folks you don't even know, better if you judge your own attitude first because therein lies the problem. There is way too much out there to be pissed about to waste emotions over such a stupid, trivial, ******** non-factor like the position of someone else's car.

Apologies.....after thinking about it, I realize now that "stupid knight rider douchbag" was probably meant as a compliment.

Actually just trying to give a rational reason to why some folks choose to park the way they do.

    My bad. [IMG]

i back into parking spots about 70% of the time. it's easier for me to back in and it doesn't take any longer than pulling in forward. i drive a tahoe, and i find i get fewer door dings when i'm backed in.

honestly, i've never even thought about it. professional parking attendants seem to always back in. maybe they know something you don't.

i back in and i never have to pull forward to straighten out, although having a jeep makes it pretty easy.

i hate people that take up two spots. if you park far away where theres nobody else around thats cool, but people that try to park their big truck near the door and take two spots when theres few to go around can rot in hell. i make it a point to pull my jeep into the half spot thats left over just to piss them off when they try to leave.

If there's no one behind me that I would delay, I back in. It's because I can't see **** when I back out of a space. If you have x-ray vision and can see through the PU on one side and the Suburban on the other side, more power to you. Me, I need to see and make sure I'm not backing out of a space and in to someone talking on the cell. That plus I'm also Knight Rider cool.

Try getting out of a UT parking garage after a football game if you're not backed in.

People that "back in" are usualy better at getting centered between the lines. So far, we've heard several ligitimate reasons for backing in and none for "pulling" in. Anyone?
