Cool guys/gals who 'back up' into parking spots

SunBurnt, it's pretty hard to believe someone who says "I don't think I'm all that" and " I drive a $53K caddy" in the same post. Maybe it's just me.

 

I did enough coke in the eighties that my 6 inch turds were worth a much as a $53K Caddy.

I back in whenever possible.

 

I back in whenever i can. Its much easier to park in reverse than to pull in straight in a Sierra 2500. When i do reverse i NEVER have to pull out to straighten my truck.

However, when there are cars behind me i will try to park straight and i usually have to reverse out to park straight and allow for a good park.

Now if you own a Prius or some other small car than backing in is useless.

 

I asked my Hispanic friend (joking of course) "Why do you people always park backwards?" after watching my neighbor do it. His reply was "So you can jet when the cops show up."

You are all doing it wrong. I gun my 83 Honda Civic up to about fiddy mph, aim at the parking spot, put it in neutral, yank on the hand brake, and slide around backwards coming to a halt in the parking place-after the smoke clears, it remove my shades, comb my hair back, and slide on out to the admiration of the masses.

 

Yeah, I don't drive a nice car (83 Subaru) but I back in just because it's easier when I leave. I won't do it if someone is waiting though. But, I do think I'm too cool for school though.

I parked backwards in my parking garage today because of this thread.

 

It's not just that they back into their spaces. These are also the same people who will not wait for you to back out when you're leaving. They will see you pulling out 40 yards away and, slamming on the gas, attempt to zoom past you even if you're halfway out of the space and there are only a few inches of clearance on either side of their car.

And then they have the balls to give you a dirty look, as though it's your fault for not seeing them coming over the giant SUV that parked next to you.

 

I tend back in a lot just because I'm paranoid about my car not starting. It's a hell of a lot easier to jump start a car that has backed-in...otherwise you need some long jumper cables. Mine are not long.

 

A bud of mine backs in. I asked him what was up with that, and he said it was simply easier with a truck to stay straight and get between the lines evenly. Anecdotally, I started noticing most trucks that pull in forwards are un-centered or angled with their back tires on the parking line.

 

I used to back in at the Dobie parking garage all the time.

 

A part-time job I had in D.C. was as a valet parker. The money was good, under the table and worked with fun people. We had to back every single car in for the obvious reason of an easier delivery of a car when a rush came.

I don't back in the vast majority of times but if I am somewhere that will unload people at about the same time I will. That way you get out a whole hell of a lot faster. But then again, I can back a car in quickly. Also having lived on the East Coast you learn how to parallel park, a skill lost on most in Texas, it seems.

I have been behind people who take forever to back in and yes, it is frustrating. It is a douche move if others are waiting to park or if you cannot do it well.

I love people who park on campus by backing in which means they are facing the wrong way. It does not take long for the ticket to appear on their windscreen.

For those people who can back in perfectly, quickly, and in between the lines, good for you. However, most of you cant

When you pull in forward, it is quick, you do not stop at all. When you back out, you have car in reverse, back out, turn wheel either direction, apply brake, put car in drive and take off That is one point (one point turn)

people who back into spots have zero point turns when they leave. However, when they park, they back up, pull forward back up some more pull forward one more time, then finaly back it in. (3-4 point)

Its obvious pulling in straight is the fastest most effective way to park (and in between the lines properly as well)

 

Waiting for a "pull in" parker to "back out" of their space is a pain in the *** too. After reading this thread, it appears that there are a few reasons why "backing in" is better. I’m convinced and will be “backing into” parking spaces from now on.

I took the kiddo to the batting cage last night at his baseball field. A few minutes after we got there, a coach from one of the other teams pulled up in his extend-a-cab truck and proceeded to back in. No other cars around. He didn't cut it sharp enough and proceeded to back up over the curb. He didn't bother straightening it out. Just got out of the truck, grabbed his bucket of balls and walked to the field.

I laughed.

What's even more amazing is that this parking lot has conjoined spaces (where you can pull straight in across one row of spaces and end up facing "out" on the other side) no more than 20 feet away from where he backed in. I guess he felt it was more important to back in right next to the curb so he could save the twelve extra steps.

 

I back into my (one and half) reserved spaces at work every day.

I also back into my garage at night.

As a result of this thread, I noticed this morning that eight of the twenty cars in my row were backed in.

Either I office with an entire legion of d-bags, or you're just a little bit "PMS'y" this week.

 

It was so easy to leave the garage yesterday (because I backed in) that I backed in again today. It's like an epiphany.

So apparently, it's easier for a truck to back in (don't remember the reason). But for regular cars, backing in doesn't make sense. You're going to have to back one way or the other (entering or leaving the space) - backing in, you have to drive backwards into a confined little space (between the lines). Backing out, all you have to do is reverse out into a wide open aisle.
How anyone finds backing from a big space to a tight space easier than backing from a tight space to an big space is questionable.

 

I pull in forward when I go out shopping because it's easier to unload the cart into the trunk with the back of the car facing the street. I pull in forward the rest of the time because I don't have to foresite to think about saving the extra 5 seconds when I leave.
