so far this flu hasn't proven to be as deadly as the avian flu. If the Mexico #s are accurate, more healthy adults may die in comparison to the seasonal flu, but so far we're not talking 1918 Spanish flu #s. if I had a frequent visitor to my house that went down to Monterrey each week, I would tell them to stop or they can stop coming to my house. Why take that chance.
I was listening to Chicago radio earlier today and officials had just finished a news conference about nine cases of flu. The reporter told the host that one reason the event was held was that the officials believed that the media would accuse them of not acting if they didn't talk about the issue. The underlying belief was that there is nothing to talk about right now, but the media would insist.
Of course there's no reason to panic, but this one is still an unknown. It's definitely spreading in the US right now, and only time will tell if this is just a blip or the start of something fairly bad. Longhorn Surgeon, if you're still reading this, and really are in the medical community, do you want to take those earlier comments back yet?
I'm flying to Mazatlan tomorrow. I'm thinking about wearing a pig-nose mask. Lot of mountain out of molehill behavior. There hasn't been 1 confirmed American death. NOT ONE. Last year, what was it, over 30k died of regular old flu, right ? Look, I'm all for precaution and better safe than sorry, but I think this is a textbook case of overreaction. I'll be on the beach tomorrow. Hopefully you scared ******** will let me back in the country. If not I'll have to save for a Coyote.
Hey, if you get sick, are you going to come back to the US for treatment? Is it fair to the people you will encounter on the plane, in customs, and in the hospital?
Your comments earlier were wonderful Uninformed. I think we come to this board looking for a good debate, so it’s easy to get one started - even if we agree.
Fort Worth ISD has closed until May 8th. I'm not sure if there are any confirmed cased but you would think there were 1000. I remember going to school and having half the class out with the flu. They didnt close school for us.
I confirmed case of swine flu in FWISD. Entire school district shuts down. is this flu bug that dangerous?
Don't be shocked when every school district in Texas and many other states close down soon for a few weeks in an effort to prevent the spread. One private pre-school in central/north Austin (Lucy Read) is closing tonight due to a probable case H1N1. It's only a matter of time for other schools to discover cases. Kids and schools are an ideal mixing station for the flu. general, right now it's not any more dangerous than the "regular" flu. It's the potential that has officials taking such drastic measures. We know that the regular flu will kill 30k in a year. We have no idea what this flu is capable of.
we have no idea, i agree. we had no idea with sars, or avian flu, either. the death rate for this new swine flu is so statistically insignificant that i wonder if we aren't crying wolf.
There still hasn't been a developed pattern of spread and the reported numbers still don't show an exponential spread. That may change. Until then, don't forward ****** "doctor" emails until we know something legit. Geez. If our own government is covering up something in the US then worldwide we will see something different anyway. AND, we still need to see morbidity and mortality numbers. Is this worse than the regular influenza?
So far, lots more people are dying of regular types of flu than this new strain. But that doesn't mean it shouldn't be taken seriously in case it explodes into the fearful "pandemic" which could kill millions of people. There still is no reason to panick or ban all public gatherings or close schools, IMO. But public elected officials will get blamed for whichever course of action they take-too cautious, or not cautious enough, so this is a touchy subject politically. We don't know yet how bad this new strain may turn out to be, and that's really the only facts available.
I received an email this morning from a doctor that says drinking Shiner Bock will make you immune to the swine flu. I have already started building up my immunity and I suggest others do the same.
"There still hasn't been a developed pattern of spread and the reported numbers still don't show an exponential melt rate. That may change. Until then, don't forward ****** emails about global warming until my feet get wet and my S. Padre condo is under water" Sorry, off topic.
US deaths by cause so far this year H1N1 aka swine flu 1* Other flu strains (pediatric deaths only) 54 Traffic accidents 10,000** I will wear my seat belt, drive defensively, wash my hands, and go to bed tonight unconcerned about dying of flu. *the patient was Mexican but made it to Houston before expiring **estimate
Biden just told people not to fly. Awesome. www.msnbc.msn.com/id/30471035/#storyContinued Seriously though. I really don't see the problem with the school shutdowns etc.. The point isn't to take the action that is "most likely" to be correct in these cases, it's to prevent a royal f**k up. Since there is still very little known on the disease, it has been shown to kill what are seemingly somewhat healthy people (at least in Mexico), and we don't have the same safeguards against it as regular influenza..... I don't see anything so far that I would say is going overboard. Most likely everyone on the internet is going to get to laugh after all of this and talk about how this was all media hype, but that won't necessarily mean the steps taken were incorrect. That being said, I am going to be on the hunt for good prices on baby back ribs at Costco.
Anyone here on Hornfans have or had swine flu or know someone directly who has? Just wondering. I don't know anyone who has had it, or anyone that knows anyone who's had it. And I live in North Jersey and work in NYC.
And I live in North Jersey and work in NYC. _____________________________________________ you are dead and dont even know it yet....
I may have had it - I got sick about a month ago, a few days after a trip to Carlsbad Caverns where I had shared 2 miles of damp handrail with about 3000 other visitors. I just thought I had the plain ol' flu, but who knows. Nobody else in my family got sick.
I've got a stuffy head, aches, a sore throat... and a doctor's appointment in about an hour. After the first 20 or so people told me "WTF is wrong with you?? Go see a doctor!!" I decided to make an appt.
