The 3rd-party applications really make the iPhone stand apart for me. Below are the apps that I think are a bargain for twice the price I paid: UltraList - the Swiss Army Knife of productivity. I'm in this tricked-out To Do List multiple times daily. Kindle reader - I haven't read from a paper-bound book in months. Manifesto - RSS reader. This consolidates newpaper articles for me to read in one place. It's Google Reader on the phone. Flight Update - flight information (e.g., delayed? gate?) is two clicks away. Pretty handy now that the are teamed up with TripIt. I can just forward my confirmation email to TripIt and the flight information (including confirm#) appears in this app about a day later. Salesforce.com - keeps me from re-keying all my clients' contact info into MS Outlook DirecTV scheduler - for those V8 moments when you realize you aren't taping the game. Below are nice apps that were worth face value, but life wouldn't end if they weren't on my phone: StreamItAll & IHeartRadio - radio station streaming. IHeartRadio has a nicer interface. WootWatch WSJ - it's free for now. not sure if I'm going to give Mr. Murdoch any money for this when he comes knocking on my door one day. The Weather Channel - a little on the overkill side, but I like the hour-by-hour forecast you can get with this. Dan Patrick - this has two functions: 1) hyperlink to his podcast on iTunes for downloading over WiFi, 2) streaming tool when you can't download podcasts Sunrise & Sunset - do I really need to know when sundown will be next week in Argentina? Probably not. Still like the app. AnnoyATeen - sends out a high-pitch tone that only kids/teens can hear. Would have thought I would only use this for a day or so as a novelty. Chipotle - mimics online ordering for this restaurant. Star Walk - one day I'm going to look brilliant in front of my son when I point to the nighttime sky and say, "See that bright light on the Eastern horizon? That's Saturn." Shazam - one day recently I did look brilliant at a restaurant when my mother-in-law said, "I wonder who is singing that song?" Games that I wish I had the disciple to remove from my iPhone: Real Racing DoodleJump PhotoHunt Games that I finally did remove: Missle Command Enigmo iShoot Flight Control
Thanks for referring to a couple of those. There are so many apps that I tend to download those that others say are worth getting. Thanks!
One app that doesn't get mentioned much on lists like these is: CardStar - It allows you to put in all your various grocery, gym, AAA, etc cards. When you need a card, it pops up a barcode which is scannable. Now you don't a bunch of cards hanging all over your keys or clogging up your wallett. I like it for when we go skiing or something and end up buying food at a random store. Now we can sign up for a membership, get the discount, and never have to worry about seeing that card again.
My favorite radio app is Infinite Tunes - search for it as "ootunes" - it is well worth the money and I use it every day.
I just found Bump yesterday - very very cool. You can transfer photos or contact info with another iPhone simply by bumping phones.
Couple of apps I've recently added: Sleep Cycle - This tracks your sleep cycle via your movements (the has to rest at the corner of your bed during the night) then wakes you up during an active period within X minutes of a time you set in the morning. RTM - an app that compliments the online task management service Remember The Milk.
Redbox You can find a certain movie or locate a kiosk and reserve the movie on your phone so it is there waiting when you get there.
Dragon Dictation is pretty cool. Just dictate a text message or email and avoid the typing altogether. Amazingly accurate. Last time I checked, it was still free. The UT app is nice to keep up with sports, etc, and especially useful for students. ESPN ScoreCenter is good to keep up with games and scores.
Dragon dictation - 4 stars I'll give it 5 stars if I can figure out how to make it stop censoring my cuss words.
I like: Orangebloods - daily Longhorn related headlines from Texassports.com, AAS, DMN, Texas Scout and other info options Cheap Gas! - finds the nearest gas stations and compares prices SoundHound - does the same as Shazam but faster (I've raced the two) and better (IMHO)
I like iSpy, a free app that connects to webcams all over the world: Croc-Cam from the crocodile pit at the Sidney Zoo; Fort Lauderdale, which scans the cruise ship port; Times Square, NYC; the beach at the Sheraton Maui, and many, many more. Some webcams let you zoom and scan. Pretty cool. Paper Toss is a timesuck. BluesCast offers a bunch of internet radio stations that play various types of blues.
I downloaded a new app the other day called "pocket BLU" , it allows me to control my blu-ray player using my iPhone. Really cool. Link to pocket BLU website.
OK, so I check out, "ootunes" app, but haven't downloaded it yet.. $4.99. Can some please give me the lowdown on this app? It seems it give you the ability to stream directly from your i-tunes library at home, which sounds awesome if you are like me and have 50gbs of music on your home PC and a 16gb i-phone. What's the scoop, Hornfans?
AroundMe, finds all sorts of things based on your location and sorts it by category. Restaurants, bars, hospitals, coffee, movie theaters, etc. Links up with google maps to show you where everything is. Also, you can turn it sideways and it switches to a camera mode and points you in the right direction for people like my wife who are directionally challenged. Would be more useful on a trip than it actually is day to day though.
Apps I've used and vouch for: Cardstar: a must if you have membership cards coming out of your wallet or key chain like crazy. I currently have my CVS card, Kroger, 24hr fitness, blockbuster, etc. stored all in my phone now. College Football Plus: Great app for all college football related news, scores, standings, rankings, etc. Pings the AP and a few other news wires intra-day for updates to all the latest breaking college football news as well. I check this daily. Geodefense: don't say I didn't warn you, this game is HIGHLY addicting and a must have! Flightcontrol: Great game for a few months, but lost it's appeal after a while. Still worth the download. Thanks for all the other great recommendations.
Downloaded Siri a few days ago and am very impressed. It's a virtual personal assistant. You just ask it a question verbally, such as "Where is the nearest Exxon gas station?" or "What is the weather forecast for Saturday?" and it provides the answer. I tried all sorts of questions and its success rate was very high.
