Maybe not a bowling ball but getting this mother of an 8 & 13 YO a new digital camera or more specifically a Panasonic FZ35 which is considered a "bridge" camera which is somewhere between a compact point & shoot and a bulky digital-SLR camera. Thought this would be a good Mother's Day gift after she muffed up a bunch of pix of our kid while on stage at the school play a couple of weeks ago. Low light plus no image stablization equaled blurry pix. It also does 720p video.

Confession time - my wife has not said anything about wanting a camera or even better pix. She is ignorant about the advances in digital photography over the last four years. I've been wanting to get into the dSLR game for some time. I'm going to look at all the buttons and icons and say "Cool!", and she's going to look at the same and say OMG.

I really think she's going to enjoy the results; however HornFan nation, do you feel the need to intercede and save me from myself?

Is this like Homer buying Marge the bowling ball with his initials??? She may pick you off. I'd be hesitant to do what you're doing and opt for something up to date digitally, but mechanically easier for her to use if it is really a gift for her.

Good luck man, don't hurt yourself.

Go ahead and get her the camera, then ask to borrow it when the time is right. But cover your bases-also buy her a toaster so she will know you really care.

Get her either the 12 or 14-lb reactive resin with the high hook potential with a finger-tip grip. My personal preference is the Hammer Widow Nasty [IMG]

Sounds like a great idea, but plan on having a big smile on your face when she gives you a couples yoga class for YOUR day.

Seriously, though, the woman I married and I recognized that I wasn't her father and she wasn't my mother so we ignore the whole day except with reference to our parents.

Wife's Day is the same day as Husband's Day. It's called an anniversary.

    NickDanger,
I'm down with that, however do you not help your kids get your wife something?

My wife would love if I got her a camera especially if that meant I'd take pictures with it

Oh, I don't get away with my attitude. I just like to act like I do.

Actually, the kids are now 18 and 19 and I just remind them and finance them for Mother's Day, now. The wife has never offered them that assistance and it doesn't hurt my feelings if they take me at my word when I tell them not to get me anything.

I got my wife and girls some bowling balls one year. Glow in the dark to boot. We had a blast and still do on occasion.

yeha...I would recommend you look at the Sony DSC-HX1. My wife has one and she LOVES it. It is also an in between, but does a whole lot.

Canon has one in this "bridge" class that gets both a lot of love and also some hate mail. Forgot the model number, but one feature I liked was it used 4 "AA" batteries. Always hard to tell if the haters are just super-picky or if their comments should be heeded.

The Sony you mentioned and the Pany both seemed to be can't loose cameras.

agree on the batteries. Just bought a low-end digital camera, for Real Estate work. I walked into Office Depot (or was it Staples?), looked at the cameras, and said "which one of these use batteries that can be bought at any gas station?".

Ended up with a Kodak. works just fine for my needs. Takes two "AA" batteries.

Went to my wife last week and said, "I want to get you a new camera for Mother's Day. The technology on the market has really improved since we bought our camera four years ago, and I think you'll like the results. However, while I have the money in 'my' account it still means I'm about to drop $400, and I wanted to discuss that big of purchase with you."

She agreed on the new camera idea but wants to wait to see how much other stuff is going to cost (e.g., repair my car, professionally clean the carpet) before we spend in that category. She's right but it take a lot of the fun out of things being married to such a practical person. Yen & yang.

Panasonic's FZ35 is still number one on my list; however, they also make a subcompact called the ZS7 that also has an improved lens package and records in HD. I can see us getting the smaller one for her (in technology she's more of a function-follows-form person) then I'll get me FZ35 later.

Don't forget to get those M-Day cards in the mail tomorrow, if applicable.
