A Federal question on the AISD registration form(s) requires parents to provide race/ethnicity information about their children. If a parent does not answer the question(s), the parent is told by school staff the data entry system business logic will not validate the registration record for insertion/creation. Parents may be told by AISD staff that this is a Federal requirement began last Fall, but now wholly integrated into registration applications for returning AISD students. Further AISD staff may suggest to parents AISD staff will take matters into their own hands and arbitrarily fill in this information without the consent of parent(s). Parents wishing to investigate further may contact AISD Student Services at 512 414-1700. Updates will follow.
Not totally true. This new way of recording race and ethnicity was put into action several years ago. The policy implementation was coordinated to align with the 2010 census.

A Bettik- How is it Obama got himself involved with the Austin ISD language on their computer system again? Was this perhaps when he visited the Longhorn Football team during the campaign- he made a quick trip to AISD to implement a new policy?
I put I was 'Hispanic' and 'other' in that section and put 'Texican-American.' On the race, I put Human, and Tex-Arab' for my 2 kids... my wife put 'Lebanese'
Schools need racial info for compiling TAKS test data. You need a high percentage of kids passing in general, but you also need high percentages of each "population" passing. Last time I checked, Obama didnt write rules for how TAKS data is to be compiled.

Not to derail the thread but if all students have to show a birth certificate and other id, like a utility bill to enroll how do illegal aliens enroll of they don't have a birth certificate? It also seems kind of counter productive when we say we want to move past race as an identifier and become blind to race then require it on forms to sign up for school.
No response from the Associate Superintendent for Elementary School or the A.S.E.S. (I don't make this stuff up) yet after being transferred from school to Student Services to here. The buck stops with Obama. The federally compelled requirement and data entry business rule prevents registration of children and hence threatens their enrollment for next school year. I find no justification for this heavy handed tactic imposed by the federal level on a local "independent" school district. Further the race or ethnicity of a child has no bearing on a child's education in a color blind society free of racial discrimination. And yet here it is actually the federal government (Obama) committing an act of racial discrimination.
How does it prevent registration? If you wont tell us your child's race, we will just assign one and life goes on. Happens all the time at my school (not AISD). School admins dont have a choice on what data is collected. State laws determine almost everyhting we do on a daily basis. All the way from kinder or pre-k registration to graduation. If you change admins to politicians, I would agree with your statement.

I can't stand Obama, but the thread title is really some bad joke. 2) there is no such thing as 'races' or 'mixed race.' There is, scientifically, DNA, speaking only ONE race: HUMAN. There is such a thing as ethnicities, but there is no such a thing as races. The fact that our government and media talk in these terms is also a bad joke.
