While not a person, I credit IBM for making Austin a tech town.

50 years in, IBM still helping shape Austin’s tech sector (statesman.com)

Didn't know IBM has been here for so long. A bit of IBM trivia is that they built the world's first anechoic chamber in one of their Austin facilities. At least that is what I was told by someone in the industry. It still exists, somewhere in The Domain.

They are on Burnet across the street from The Domain.

I am aware of that, but the anechoic chamber is in the Domain itself. They used to own all that land.

Which tech company used to dump toxic waste in that rock quarry in far North Austin that's filled up with water?

The Chemistry Department continues to excel.

Chemistry Professor Receives Sloan Research Fellowship and Mark Young Scholar Award

"A Sloan Research Fellowship, given by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, is one of the most competitive and prestigious awards available to early-career scholars in fields ranging from computer science to physics, and Zachariah Page of the Department of Chemistry was announced as one of the newest fellows.

In the same week, the American Chemical Society (ACS) named Page the winner of the 2024 Mark Young Scholar Award, in recognition of excellence in basic research and leadership in polymer science. The award is given only once every two years to a researcher age 35 or younger.

Page’s research is focused on developing and integrating selective chemical reactions triggered by light to: synthesize polymers with high speed and efficiency; create multifunctional “smart” plastics that are mechanically robust; and manufacture hierarchical plastics through next generation 3D printing technology. These materials and processes are poised to improve the health and wellbeing of society through applications in stretchable electronics, soft robotics, tissue engineering and more."

Student newspaper pushes for Marxist Economics Professors.

I say we should have one on the Economics faculty, so people could learn what it's all about in depth. Even a dolt could see it doesn't work in the real world, but it's been such a driver of the modern history of many countries in the world. Students should get to learn what it's all about--even from the Marxist prospective.

    The Daily Texan's Conclusion:

"The solution is simple: UT should hire Marxist professors who will supervise interested students and teach introductory and graduate-level Marxist courses. Only then can students begin to critically understand the world they inhabit."

For a holistic curriculum, UT needs Marxist economics professors

Think of it like this, what if a theology seminary had 1 atheist professor on staff to challenge the views of the students, and get them used to countering some of the arguments of the adversaries.

Communism in the form of woke, sjw, critical theory marxism is the dominant ideology and in power over all the institutions in the US.

Kind of silly to "grant" them one spot on a faculty group. They own the group.

What if a math class was taught by an English professor? Would challenge what most expect from a math class. Now what would students actually learn?

What the f**k is a gender minority?

Two aerospace engineering juniors at The University of Texas at Austin are recipients of the 2024 Brooke Owens Fellowship. Samantha Dolski and Wendy Rossi are among 47 women across the globe selected for the fellowship, which recognizes exceptional undergraduate women and other gender minorities studying aerospace engineering.

    mc,

In Travis County, males are a "gender minority" at The University of Texas. The school is now 60% female. If you are interested, it is 19% Asian.

What if I identify as a male lesbian? Would I qualify for the scholarship? Or is that a sexual orientation?

Making those cretins go back to the classroom is an insult to the students and grounds for tuition reimbursement.
