The ball handler and the player setting the screen have to be on the same page. When ou downs the ball screen the player setting the screen needs to screen the inside shoulder and the guard can try to attack the defensive post player and make a play. The player setting the screen can also screen the inside shoulder and pop out for an open jumper or put the ball on the floor and make a play.
Too often when ou downs the ball screen the player setting the screen will just stand there and try to set the screen on the outside shoulder so the ball handler can dribble over the screen, but ou isn't going to let them do that which is why they're downing the ball screen. When you watch the game today you'll see the Texas ball handlers trying to dribble over the screen, but because ou is downing it the offense gets stagnant. If Coach Aston taught them how to attack the down ball screens they could get wide open jump shots at the top of the key or be able to put the ball on the floor and make a play from the top of the key.
