Per 247 Sports: "Horns247 has learned that Purdue defensive backs coach Taver Johnson is expected to leave his post with the Boilermakers to take the same position in Austin. . Johnson has spent most of his career in the Big Ten region, but he is no stranger to being around some of the nation’s top programs. Johnson coached the last two seasons at Purdue, worked with defensive backs at Ohio State (2007-2011), served two stints at Miami (Ohio) (2000-2003 as defensive ends coach and 2005-06 as defensive coordinator) and was a graduate assistant at Notre Dame (1999). Johnson also spent the 2004 season as the special teams coordinator for the Cleveland Browns. Johnson worked the 2012 and 2013 seasons at Arkansas. He was the interim head coach for the Razorbacks in the spring of 2012 before the program hired John L. Smith to replace Bobby Petrino. As a recruiter Johnson’s biggest get as came during his final cycle with the Buckeyes when he served as the primary recruiter for Doran Grant, a fourth round draft choice by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2015. Johnson also coached 2008 Thorpe Award winner Malcolm Jenkins, a Pro Bowl cornerback with the Philadelphia Eagles, during his time at Ohio State. Johnson was part of an Ohio State staff that led the program to four Big Ten titles and four BCS games during his time working under Jim Tressel. That run of major bowl appearances included the 2007 BCS title game and the 2009 Fiesta Bowl against Texas." So, what positions are open? I have: RB Coach - open WR Coach - open DB Coach - T. Johnson OC/QB Coach - Gilbert OL Coach - Mattox What's missing?
Special Teams? That was Traylor last year right? or was that the DB coach or a mixture of everyone? Lord knows we need someone who specializes in Extra Points and catching snaps......too soon?
Found this on FootballScoop. Texas: Texas is set to hire Taver Johnson away from Purdue to serve as defensive backs coach according to Jeff Howe of Horns247. Johnson previously coached defensive backs for Ohio State, Arkansas and the Philadelphia Eagles. Sources tell us Johnson has not been offered yet but would accept if offered. The Scoop – FootballScoop So what is the holdup?
Approval? Lots of "expected to be hired" and references to Horns247 story but no confirmation that I could find.
Please help me understand this, we "terminate" a guy when the NCAA comes snooping around because of things he did in Oxford? Strong is contemplating replacing the NCAA "target" with someone that worked for Jim Tressel? Is that the same Tressel that has a show cause, and is a worse cheater than a combination of Switzer, Sherrill, and Schnellenberger combined? If this guy comes to Austin, he better be squeakey clean and gold plated.
Agree Sabre, but the firing/hiring happened so quick it almost had to be a done deal before NSD. Strong cannot make the team squeaky clean without doing the same with the coaches.
Viper, That is my point, but Strong is replacing the target of an NCAA investigation with a former member of Tressell's staff.
Are you suggesting that anybody who coaches under a dirtbag like Tressel or Switzer or Sherrill by extension is also tainted goods?
No to Barry and Jackie. Like I said, little Jimmy is worse than all combined. I question hiring a former Tressel assistant to replace someone supposedly drawing NCAA scrutiny. Ain't like there aren't others equally qualified without the smudges, unless of course you are having trouble finding "takers".
I guess the real question is with a hole in the staff and ST coming up was Johnson the best he could do? Personally I believe he should have offered Bedford the job or be gone. The problem is whoever is the DC has to be a yes man for Charlie who still is the DC in all but name. He will not progress to a successful Power 5 HC until he realizes the responsibilities of HC leaves no time for also being a Coordinator.
247sports said a few hours ago that Taver may not be the only one on the table. Clay Jennings (at Arkansas) may also be under consideration. So we have a proverbial "fluid situation", I guess....
I can see coaches leaving for more money, promotions, Alma-Maters, work under a close friend, being close to family, like or dis-like of the system.......no big deal.....The key is the head coach and the two co-ordinators. They make the game plans and game time decisions that are critical to winning.
i see the need to make sure he's squeaky clean and gold plated. but i wouldn't avoid the best hire based on one past connection.
So we have every position coach opening filled: RB Coach - A. Johnson WR Coach - Williams DB Coach - Jennings OC/QB Coach - Gilbert OL Coach - Mattox
So Taver J. vs Jennings ended up being both interviewed and one selected or what? Clearly Coach Jennings is now the choice. Any scoop to share or not? Was the talk about coach Taver J. initially overdone by one service or another?
It is my sincere hope that Charlie gets the opportunity to go all "borderline erotic" (minus the borderline part) on Burt Bulimia, but the sec/espn alliance will probably never let that match up happen.
