Good Stuff. The Secretariat shot should have been the one where it shows him winning by 30 lenghts, that was amazing
I would have put Ali-Liston first, that photo is the truly iconic one of Ali. Also the shot of Turcotte looking back from secretariat at the Belmont, those two are unforgettable shots. Lots of great ones in that list.
The one of Vince should have been the superman, imo. Also, the one of NC State should have been Valvano rushing the court. Kirk Gibson should have been the fist pump rounding 2nd as opposed to the collision. Love the one of Dr. J but if you're gonna go with one I prefer the under the basket, arm extended Others that I thought of: Tyson trying to put his mouth piece in vs Buster Douglas Joe Carter walk off Pele bicycle kick Nolan's beat down any of a number of Jim Abbot would have been nice Larry Bird saving the ball out of bounds I remember when I was a kid the SI picture of Ray Mancini punching Duk Kim in the chest and wondering if that was the one that killed him. I know now it was the 15 rounds of blunt force but that picture was/is seared in my mind's eye.. Speaking of boxing - Hagler v Leonard (I'd like to argue with you if you thought Leonard won ) Nadia Comaneci 10 Myabe a tennis shot or two more. Agassi was so colorful, Borg, Lendl or Sampras or Federer (or Nadal......). Noticeably absent: Lance Armstrong
Woulda loved to see Joe Fraziers left hook puttin Ali on his *** in Ali-Frazier I As much as it pains me the pic of Bad Roy flying over our oline and Brett Robin to crush Simms and cause that int/td is a pretty cool pic
With all due respect, the LSU / Stanford CWS pic (#68) is not the greatest... I look at that picture at least once a year, and I always laugh out loud when I do.
The impact of #5, Michael Phelps, in his closest race ( that he controlled- 400 free relay a close second) has to be impressive. 8 gold medals, one Olympics , one of the greatest athletes of all time, up there with Jim Thorpe and Jesse Owens IMHO.
That #61 picture of Roberto Clemente reminds me of what a truly great player he was. He was right up there with all the greats. There was no aspect of the game he didn't excel at. He had the strongest throwing arm of all time according to many experts. There were pictures from the 71' World Series they could have used better than that pic. He was the MVP of that Series. I guess they wanted a pic from his last season before the crash that took his life doing humanitory work in Puerto Rico. Also there were some pretty memorable pictures from the "Ice Bowl" between Dallas and Green Bay.
Yea, Bob Hayes with his hands in his pockets would have been classic. First game I really remember. Also the pic of Street talking to Royal with the 100 yr helmet.
I remember this one of Bart Star's sneak for the winning TD. That's fullback Chuck Mercein signalling for the score.
I remember when they were really strict about that assisting the runner call. Now you can do everything but pick the runner up and carry him piggy back.
#9 - The one of the Buffalo Bills defense abusing the then Raider Jay Schroeder is the iconic photo like this. This Borwns/Steelers photo I've never even seen before in my life...and its #9 all time? #15 - Holy crap look at the turf...that was a Super Bowl! #20 - My dad is in this photo. He was the NBA editor for the Associated Press for many years. This was a popular poster in the Jordan era, and my dad (also a UT alum) was very recognizable in it. All my classmates at school thought it was cool. This is kind of a random list. I haven't seen many of these photos before, and many of them were from mostly unheard of events. A picture of a fish and 2 amputees from Africa playing soccer are among the greatest sports photos of all time? This is a dumb list...boo SI for a poor job.
