    OFFENSE

    QB Sam Ehlinger (EE – early enrollee)

    Austin Westlake signal-caller and Texas pledge Sam Ehlinger is good at violence and consequently he’s also good at reacting calmly and decisively when violence surrounds him. That combination of attributes, best described as fearlessness, makes Ehlinger special. His fortitude is the defining trait that unifies a diverse set of skills and makes Ehlinger as a total player one of the best QB recruits Texas has seen in quite some time.

    As a runner, Ehlinger is at his best cutting upfield and lowering his shoulder. The Chaparrals ran a few varieties of inside zone and power to feature his ability to plant and make gains running between the tackles. Even better, as a runner Ehlinger is basically a fullback. If he didn’t have a fantastic arm, elite pocket presence, and accuracy throwing the football, I think he could still probably earn a D1 scholarship as a fullback prospect.

    The ability to calmly and quickly process info in the midst of violent chaos before delivering an accurate ball is one of the single most valuable skills in the game and often a major reason that highly touted prospects don’t make it at the higher levels.

    Not only is Ehlinger particularly good in the sorts of off-schedule plays that often make college QBs, but he’s uniquely excellent at executing in the pocket. He’s clearly more afraid of failing to make a play than taking it on the chin.

    The kid is simply unafraid out on the field and plays with a sort of reckless abandon either in the run game or the passing game that makes him impervious to the kinds of tactics that are typically used to throw off QBs.

    Ehlinger is a quarterback who plays the game with a lot of confidence and is just a winner. His leadership on the offensive side of the ball led to some big things for the Chapparal's offense and in turn helped him put up some remarkable stats. He is very accurate. He is not afraid to press the action and make things happen, but he does not force things and make bad decisions with the football. He is not speedy, but he is fast enough and savvy enough to gouge defenses off the option or when he pulls the ball down to run if things break down. He is a strong runner with the ball in his hands, he will run over you if need be. He has the arm to make all of the necessary throws. Throws a good deep ball.

    He earned All-State, All-District and Scout Midlands Offensive Player of the Year honors.

    RB Toneil Carter (EE – early enrollee)
    Houston, TX (Langham Creek HS) – Video
    :hookem::hookem::hookem::hookem:-horn – 5-10.5/197 – #7 national position rank – 247

    Carter is plain fast, probably a 4.5 guy or so in the 40, and he’s very used to using that speed to fly through holes behind lead blockers or to work the edge on power-read plays of the sort that are surely coming to Texas in the near future. At Langham Creek he was regularly working on inside zone plays running behind an H-back and his knack for quickly finding the crease and exploding through it would make for exciting offense in Herman’s run game. He also has the hands to do some work on the perimeter like Catalon did at Houston this year. Carter is a likely feature back in the not too distant future.
    [IT]

    Carter is a special runner who has shown an ability from a young age to be a difference maker. He has the size to be able to run through arm tackles and shows good burst to make defenders miss. He has good top-end speed and solid track speed (10.87 100-meter) and it shows on tape as he is able to take runs the distance once he gets a crease. Carter is a middle of the field runner and when he gets a seam he hits the gas pedal and gets up the field quickly, wasting little time to get positive yards and break big plays. He is better running north and south, but does show the ability to stop and go to extend plays and dodge defenders.

    Strengths: breakaway speed, instincts, vision.

    RB Daniel Young
    Houston, TX (Westfield HS) – Video
    :hookem::hookem::hookem:-horn – 6/210 – #63 national position rank – 247

    Young is one of the more interesting running backs I’ve seen out of high school. He lacks breakaway speed but his first few steps typically get him to the hole and he has a spin move he uses liberally to help him cut through traffic. He’s not a guy Texas will want to try and use to flank opponents on the perimeter but he’s a wrecking ball between the tackles and if he learns to block he could be a nice complement as a RB/FB hybrid.

    Daniel Young is a powerback who... hits the hole hard and finishes runs with physical nature. Flashes strength to break tackles at the LOS and second level. Size and strength aid in blitz pickup as well. Young capped his high school career with 1,290 yards and 19 touchdowns on 7.3 yards per carry as a senior.

    Strengths: instincts, power, and tackle-breaking ability.

    WR Damion Miller
    Tyler, TX (John Tyler HS) – Video
    :hookem::hookem::hookem::hookem:-horn – 6-1/193 – #24 national position rank – 247

    Miller has a lengthy, lean frame with long arms and room to add weight. With a blend of quickness and size that allows him to play inside or outside, Miller is a home run threat who can score from anywhere on the field. Possessing good short area burst with smooth acceleration to create space in the short and intermediate game, Miller also has an after burner to easily create separation on deep routes and get behind the defense.

    Miller is a natural pass catcher who does well in traffic and shows great skill when tracking the ball over his shoulder. His body control and leaping ability make him a threat on jump balls, and the East Texas star doesn’t mind mixing it up physically with defensive backs.
    [HS]

    Miller is a big-time receiver prospect. Above average size and good speed make for tough matchup, especially in man coverage. Accelerates well in short areas, impressively so for a long-striding WR. Adjusts well to ball in flight. Threat in red zone w/verified 36-inch vertical. A bit raw. Will need to add strength, but possesses frame to do so. Plenty of time for young WR to develop further.

    Strengths: body control, downfield threat, and running ability.

    Carter's highlights are amazing, he'll be a big player for sure. Also impressed with Young. Doesn't seem to have the top-end speed but looks like a bowling ball out there.
