I think it was "unofficially" retired after Brian Jones. Then it would be brought back on occasion starting with Dusty Renfro in the Cotton Bowl against MSU.
Maybe #60 should be hired as an assistant coach for tackleing. #60 did not tackle much though. He just knocked the snot out of everyone.
The #60 had been given out a few times over the years since Tommy Nobis made it famous. Brett Hager and Brian Jones wore it because they supposedly earned the right by their play. I remember after the OU game back when Brian Jones was playing at Texas and we won that game. I was making my way out of the fairgrounds with some friends. I was wearing my #60 jersey and happen to run into Brian Jones and he saw me wearing that jersey and came up and asked if I was wearing it for him? Nope, I told him I am wearing it for who made it famous and I always will. Then we kept walking, he had a funny look on his face as we left.
I've never thought that Brian Jones was worthy of 60...when I think of great Texas linebackers his name does not come to mind. Hager worthy but few since Nobis have been...I still don't know why they didn't give it to DJ when he was handed a jersey as a Freshman...we all knew this he was going to be a beast...hell he still is. He was worthy but few have been in my mind in the last 20 years. If only we recruited LB talent again...
Nobis is one year younger than I am. For those of you who did not see him play I hope you can see some film some day. I could not find anything on u tube. I have never seen a more fierce hitter. I saw all of his hs games when he was a senior. He probably would draw a lot of penalities today. He would hit smaller runners and they looked like they came off a trampoline. At UT he played linebacker and offensive guard. When we needed to reach the goal line on short yardage Tommy would lead the runner into the end zone. It would be nice to clone a couple of Tommies for this team.
