What if you were told Sanders, Helm and Davis were our TEs last year? Only a year younger with less experience.
Fully aware of that. Also know we got lucky with no injuries at that position. Just making a wish list of portal needs.
Trevell Johnson suffered a major injury his Senior year of HS. Perhaps he has not been able to get back to where he was, and progress from there, on the field and in the weight room...? Hopefully, he can get it all together--here, or someplace else if he opts out. I scratched my head when we took Johnson over "Showtime" Sherman. Sherman had some freakishly awesome HS film, and he received a coveted invite to our pool party/bbq. But, when Showtime ended up in Jr. College instead of the U. of New Mexico (where he committed), it became evident that the classroom was a real challenge for that particular scholar-athlete...
Good to hear that Hill is coming along well at LB. I'm also interested in the development of the LB from Hawaii. Our young LBs have to really step up to help out Ford. That 2nd LB position could be the one weakness on the D if the new guys don't come through.
I wouldn’t worry. Blackwell has already done a few nice things. We have guys that will make tackles. If the interior maintains or even increases its presence and keeps the LBs clean, they will make tackles. Their biggest weakness is protecting the middle of the field in the passing game, which is part discipline. That improved over the season last year though. From the readings, Hill is gonna be a pass rusher. We will see if he attempts much as a traditional LB. Blackwell will mix it up. Personally I don’t give a **** if he’s 205 or 225, he needs to be at his natural playing weight whatever that may be. I’d bet Gbenda is a pain in the *** in certain 1 on 1 drills. He’s a ball of thunder but has he learned to read a play? I’d bet he’s better. Maybe we’ll see how good. Remember we let Richardson walk after he got spurts of playing time later in the season. LBs do your job and do it consistently.
I don't think that's going to be much of a problem with our 2 deep of interior DT/NTs. Edge pass rushing is what needs to step up from ok to good or really good. If that happens, with these DBs... I think we're going to be really good on D.
Completely agree on this. Speed and "linebacker instincts" are more important than weight and strength for LBs in this defense. As long as he's just strong enough not to get repeatedly bowled over by blockers. For this D, we need speedy LBs, not brutes like Dick Butkas.
I agree and obviously hope that’s what we get. My guess is we’ll get attacked differently from opponents offense, but I’m not sure what that’ll mean. I’ve referenced it on this board, but virtually every one of our players depth of tackle decrease from ‘21 to ‘22. Ovies decreased about 3 yards per tackle so his impact over the prior year was measurable too. We don’t let him walk if we’re not comfortable with the alternatives. Whatever we did rushing the passer versus TCU, that’s the objective. One blown coverage and one long run kept that from being one of the best defensive efforts in the country the entire year. I think we step it up even more this year.
Evers and Worthy on long pass to 10 yd set up first score Arch had 3 and out on his first but he looks comfortable
A tremendous interview Jalen with DJ. Derrick still has passion for the game. And he challenged Ford to be better and "badder" than last year. They went to award case with DJs awards. Damn miss him But Ford seems like he will try to fill the shoes
It is just the spring game but Sark seems excited with what he is seeing Mistakes and all Whoever on here was high on Red was spot on
