We rescued a mixed breed from the pound. He seems to be mostly lab but with Rot coloring. He has always been super friendly with people and is very loving with my family. He gets along with our other dog, but he often gets really rough when trying to assert his dominance. He is about two and a half now. The problem is that he is very aggressive with other animals. He goes straight for other dogs when he sees one and acts like he wants to kill them. No posturing, no sniffing, no growling, just attack. Same for cats and other small animals. We had him out at our farm when my aunt showed up with her small dog. She thought she could "introduce" them but he went straight to kill mode and grabbed him by the back and starting shaking. I was around back when she tried this and just got there in time to pull them apart. I don't really understand what is going on. He listens to my commands, walks well on a leash, goes into his kennel when told to and has the appearance of a well behaved dog. He even follows me around off the leash and sits next to me when I stop. So, is there any hope? Can this behavior be trained out of him?
I think there is a lot of hope for your dog. Most dog behavior problems can be fixed. I can't promise this will work, but I would suggest you at least look through Cesar Milan's (The Dog Whisperer) website for a solution. The home page has a dog behavior drop down and then you can click on aggression. Maybe you can find something helpful. Good luck.
One of my neighbors-his wife is some kind of pro dog trainer, I think for therapy dogs. I will try to catch them one evening and ask them your question.
Lee Mannix is an aggression specialist in Austin. He is consulted not just locally about things like this and much worse. His can sometimes be the decision that can mean life or death for a dog and he has saved MANY from what would seem a hopeless case, which your dog is FAR from. Yes, it can be trained out of that. But remember, they are training you to train the dog in most situations. Your dog lives for pleasing you so you have to know how to teach it what to do. If he or his trainers are busy they will have suggestions for you as to other trainers. Also, check with your vet and suggestions by the above posters friend. Good luck and provide photos and follow up on yer pooch!
oh ****, nevermind. I went to fetch his info for you and it turns out he was killed two years ago in a car accident. My respects to his family, friends and clients. So, ask your vet and take the advice provided from the above poster. I am stunned. Lee Mannix, rest in peace. It's a nice read and gives you an understanding about the man. Also, there is a name of his assistant who may have a service in Austin now. I suggest the read.
No you wouldn't, you'd be a dog and not think that way. Unless you are a breeder or know how to breed dogs it's a very sound decision to make for an owner that loves his pet. It increases their health and reduces risks to other things as well as tempers them. It's the right thing to do long run as messed up as it seems to our human minds. If it bugs you, get the dog some Neuticals. yup, fake balls I really wanted to get some for my dog after surgery but my girlfriend at the time staunchly fought me on it. She was right though, my dog was a girl. Still, it would have been funny.
Yeah, I guess it was a little too slapstick. In person, my humor is typically a lot dryer. I didn't know how people on hornfans would respond, though, to my story about the moyel and my East German Shepherd.
He didn't make it out of the shelter with his stones. He must still feel them because he is always trying to hump our other dog. Does anyone have any experience with a dog muzzle? I think I want to get him close to other dogs more often so he will relax. What about doggie Valium?
