This is probably off-the wall, but I have long had a theory that this Russian dish is derived from Mongol fare. First of all, it is kind of a stir-fry. Next, analogous ingredients were all available to The Horde. Substitute horse meat for beef, wild onions, and mushrooms from the forests. Add some sour mare's milk and a little horse blood for color and Voila!! Not sure I would be willing to test the theory in a kitchen, or the dining room.
