    WorsterMan SEC here we come!!

Music speaks to generations, defines eras, is subjective and of course a matter of personal taste. Having said all that, I have been rolling around in my head some songs that I think were greatness the first time I heard them - signficant classics in no particular order. I probably lean a little more to the 60's, but these songs, to me, still stand the test of time.

I will probably add to the list later, but here are a few off the top of my head. Please feel free to add to the list:

    1. My Back Pages - The Byrds
    2. Ride My See-saw - The Moody Blues
    3. Hypnotized - Fleetwood Mac
    4. Day in the Life - The Beatles
    5. Us & Them - Pink Floyd
    6. Are you going to San Francisco - Scott McKenzie
    7. 8 Miles High - The Byrds
    8. Strawberry Fields - The Beatles
    9. I'm Not In Love - 10CC
    10. White Rabbit - Jefferson Airplane

I hope we're not keeping to only 10. My head would explode.

Personally, I'd replace 10CC with The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys by Traffic.

Wish you were here by Pink Floyd is on my list too.

And y'all flame away but I'm a sucker for anything Peter, Paul and Mary. Her voice, oh her voice. Blowin' in the Wind may well be their best but I'm not discounting anything from them.

Down to the Crossroads by Cream has gotta count for something too.

I could go on and on but let's hear from the learned guests of HF!

I am keeping 10cc on that list and replacing #6 with

    ? and the Mysterians

In there for me as well is Archie Bell and the Drells with Tighten Up, Starbuck with Moonlight Feels Right. I am also putting War - Spill The Wine.

That is what quickly comes to mind.

    Take it easy (Jackson Browne)
    Purple Haze (Jimi Hendrix)
A little help from my friends (Beatles)
Me and Bobbie McGee (K. Kristofferson) Janis Joplin version
Bad Moon Rising (Creedence Clearwater Revival)
    Amie (Pure Prairie League)
    Sweet home Alabama (Lynyard Skynyrd)
Born to be wild (Mars Bonfire) Steppenwolf version
    Light my fire (The Doors)
    Mr Tambourine Man (B. Dylan)

I'll add an extra one because the song, "I want to hold your hand", wasn't one of the Beatles' best but it was the first Beatles song I heard, either on KLIF or KBOX, headed to the Dr. Pepper high school basketball tournament (I think that's what it was called) in December 1963.

Thanks Doc. I have to admit that it required some research to remind me. My spontaneous memory isn't what it used to be.

OK, LonghornCatholic pass the chips and jalapenos. We have enough cheesy for nachos! [IMG] The song, however, is awesome.

This is a really great video of a great band which is not cheesy like some think. They were super talented and their sound changed with the times yet still brought back that DooWop type thing.

In this video you can tell it's the 70s but man they look the part. They kind of look tired as if they had been partying hard for years which they likely were. There is just something about it that is sort of sad. I love this song and now this video. Without further delay...

Four Seasons - Who Loves You?

Good stuff guys and for sure we don't need to keep it to 10. Several of you had a some good suggestions - Low Spark, Crossroads, Spill the Wine, Old Hippie & I00p lists. I heard yrs ago that Archie Bell & the Drells played UT Fraternity parties and other gigs in Austin area before they started that famous new dance in Houston Texas... and made it big.

Not something I will put on the list, but probably my alltime favorite song is: "So you want to be a Rock n' Roll Star by the Byrds.

    Here are few more nominees:

    1. Season of the Witch - Donovan
    2. Sky Pilot - Eric Burdon & War
    3. Communications Breakdown - Zepplin
    4. Something in the Air - Thunderclap Newman
    5. I'm a Man - Spencer Davis Group
    6. Fortunate Son - CCR

On the lighter side / Motown:

    1. Sun Godess - Ramsey Lewis & EWF
    2. Grazin' in the Grass - Friends of Distinction
    3. The Horse - forgot who that was by
    4. Apples Peaches Pumpkin Pie - Jay & The Techniques
    5. What is Hip - Tower of Power

Songs we can all agree do not deserve to be on the list:

    1. Sugar, Sugar - the Archies
    2. ABC - The Jackson Five
    3. Gypsies Tramps & Thieves - Cher
    4. Don't go Breakin my Heart - E. John
    5. I am Woman - Helen Ready

Re: above songs... if I am listening to an oldie station while working outside - those are songs I will get down off the ladder to turn down the volume.

    1. Pinball Wizard -- The Who
    2. Long, Long Time -- Linda Ronstadt
    3. Touch Me -- The Doors (all-time favorite song)
    4. Time Won't Let Me -- The Outsiders
    5. C'mon Marianne -- The Four Seasons (wrong spelling, but hey!)
    6. Bernadette -- The Four Tops (actually, anything by the Tops, Motown's greatest gift to the world; their music is iconic)
    7. One More Time to Live -- The Moody Blues
    8. Homeward Bound -- Simon and Garfunkel
    9. Suffragette City -- David Bowie
    10. God Only Knows -- The Beach Boys

"You've made me so very happy" is a personal favorite. Perhaps it isn't as iconic as the thread requires but oh my..... I used to go ice skating as a kid and when this or really any other BS&T song started playing, it was ON. No body was immune from my evil at that point. I hope TOF doesn't read Quacks, but man oh man was that fun. Sorry you had to hear about it this way dad! [IMG]
