What's the best route? Was planning on the Brownwood to Amarillo to Raton, up to Denver, then across on 70 and up on 40 route.

Googled around on this a couple of years ago and learned that there is intense debate, even among the professional drivers, but that was largely because I was going in the winter, when road conditions are a key point. Summertime, I guess you go the shortest way.

There was/always is some 55 mph BS in the NM section of that route, but, that is the route we took to get back from our vacation last Friday.

Still that is always the most exciting part of a vacation coming up from Texas. The view of Rabbit Ears mountain from just 18 miles out of Dalhart is a dramatic reward for flatlanders and the first sign of awe inspiring landscapes to come.
